Black smoke.

Changed the fuel filter and it's a lot, lot less now, only when I really get on it does it come out, but it's still there. What can be done to get rid of it?

Thanks.

Black smoke is too much fuel not enough air. Air filter in good shape? Boost leaks?

I just went a bought the K @ N air cleaner kit, filter is drying off at the moment. It was not all too clean so I hope that helps.

Thanks.

Btw, is changing the fuel filter and cleaning or replacing the air filter pretty much all there is to a tune-up on a diesel? And is there any kind of injector cleaner that can be added to the fuel like on a gasoline engine?

Thanks.

Well, you'd have a hard time changing sparkplugs and wires!!

Seriously, air filter, fuel filter, and oil changes. Make sure you run good diesel rated oil in these trucks. If you are still running a stock air box for your air filter, make sure it doesn't leak. And, you will find most guys on the diesel forums are not big fans of the K&N Filters. They do let more dirt in than what you may think.

Stanadyne from Ford is a good diesel additive. Power Service is another popular one. Some guys run the 2 cycle oil (1 ounce per gallon) for marine use too. The 2 cycle is actually one of the better additives for lubricity for the injectors. Bio-diesel is actually the best for that purpose from what I've heard and read. I prefer any additive that boost the cetane rating, and offers anti-gel protection for the winter. Power Service has a summer and a winter mix. That can easily be found at any truckstop.

Here's a thread about cleaning the Exhaust Back Pressure Tube and sensor. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...nsor-pics.html

If your truck is stock, you should have almost no smoke at all. If you do have a black smoke issue, then something is wrong. The first place to look is exhaust leaks at the manifolds and up pipes. Look for black soot marks around those locations. A leak in the pressure side of the turbo will also cause excessive black smoke. Check all of the boots to make sure they are on tight and don't have any tears or rips in them.

The filter came on the truck already. I'm letting the filter dry out overnight, I'll oil it first thing in the morning and see how she does for the day. As for any possible exhaust or turbo leaks, I'll leave that to the mechanic to look for in a few days as she'll be up on a lift.

I'll let you all know how she turns out, thanks.

Cleaning the air filter will most likely not help all of the black smoke issue. The K&N filter states that you can run it a 100,000 miles (give or take) with no cleaning.... it states 'the dirtier the better (don't like that statement). The big problem with the drop in filters (imo) is that the box is not sealed the best by the operator. Make sure the box top is put on correctly.

You're right, there is still a slight bit of black smoke, most noticeable when I really get on it but it's much less. On start up or idling there's none but coming from a stop it's still trickling out, dependent upon how hard I hit the pedal. I'll have the shop take a look on Monday.

I will say that I got excellent mileage this morning. I didn't check the odometer first but I drove an approximate 50 miles round trip and the needle hardly moved. And she runs really crisp, compeletely different than yesterday.

Glad I cleaned it.
