How'd I do?

Hey, I'm kinda having buyer's remorse. I bought a 2002 XLT 2WD V10 Excursion with 105,000 miles at an auction for $4,700. I've seen some on CL that have more options near the price.

It is in really nice shape, a little wear on the driver's cloth seat with rubber flooring instead of carpet. It has a "ranch hand" grill guard and tinted windows.

I changed all of the fluids, Synthetic engine oil, Transmission flushed with new filter and serviced rear differential. Had it inspected; ball joints and brakes good with almost new "e" rated tires. They found #7 COP faulty and plug fowled with all others new.

Is there any gotcha's I should look for?

Thanks!

Like any vehicle that has hit 100k miles you'll need some front end work. If done by others $1,000 should be a sufficient budget. Most of that is labor so if you DIY you can knock that down quite a bit.

You've already hit the ignition system. Check the brakes and drivetrain and wheel bearings while you are looking at the front end.

Test the alternator and coolent. Also consider flushing the power steering fluid and brake fluid.

In short just the basic maintenance you would do on any vehicle at this stage. Take care of those and you should be good for another 50k miles at which point I would start watching the transmission. It may go for 200k miles but you don't know whether it was abused by the prior owner.

Think of it this way. Even if it needs $2k of work for under $7k you've got a vehicle that should drive like it is new and shouldn't need any major work for another 50-100k miles.

Note: We generally purchase used vehicles for our business fleet (usually 40k-60k miles) and spend the time to search for vehicles that appear to be taken care of. Basically any used vehicle is going to need at least $500 of work and the average for the good ones is about $1500. If you only need $2k worth of work it is a good deal.

We had bought our first 01 X V10 Limited 4X4 with little over 130K on the clock for $5500.00 it was in really really beautifull condition. The bummer came after having it for almost 3 - 4 years and it got into a wreck. But when we hit head-on I can say one thing (we barely felt a thing) as they are just really nice heavy and large vehicles. But since that took place we got us an 05 X V10 Limited 4X4. We then sold that one off after I came across another just like it but in even better shape and way lower miles on it, and also in my favorite color.

He already had ball joints and brakes checked. There isn't a whole bunch left to worry about on a 2wd front end. Shocks are about the only other thing that seem to give out at about 100k on these and they are a fairly easy DIY job. I think you did real good on price. I just traded my XLT 2WD to a dealer for $3500, but it is 2 years older, has 152k miles, has only about 25% left on tires, and the paint was falling off. Good Job, remorse not necessary

FWIW - After having both 2WD and 4WD versions now, the 2WD is much less fussy on handling issues. After about 100k I went through and changed all the sway bar & radius arm bushings. The RAS and 10 ply tires made it pretty stiff, but it drove straight as an arrow and never had any of the wandering issues that the 4wd owners complain about.

Sounds to me like you got a good deal on a pretty solid Excursion. I wouldn't be remorseful at all. Keep up on your service schedule it shuold give you years of great performance.

Happy motoring.

I'm pretty happy overall.. I also did have the coolant flushed. Drove from Kansas City to Oklahoma City and got 15 MPG!!! I wasn't expecting this, quite the surprise, for the better. Is this pretty normal highway mileage?
