Question turbo upgrades: what are my options and what will they do?

I'm building my "wishlist" and i know that there comes a point where you can't gain power because of the turbo, and if you do it'll blow that puppy. so i wanted to see what all the available options there are and what kind of levels there are. would I be fine with just going to a 1.0 A/R housing, or should i upgrade the whole turbo? Is the Banks quick spool housing worth a dang, or is it just as over priced and inflated as the rest of the banks gear? I'm really just trying to educate myself more, since the whole engine component thing is a mystery to me. I get intake, exhaust, chip, injector, and that kind of stuff, but everything gets fuzzy when it comes to turbos, HPOP, rods, camshafts, and all that jazz...

You won't want the smaller exhaust housing, especially if you are planning on going with bigger injectors.
The D66 from Bean's is the only turbo that is a bolt-in. It's a modified stock turbo to flow more air. Aside from that, you're looking at switching to a T4 mount, then the options are nearly endless. TONS of different turbos out there depending on your HP goals and how fat your wallet is.

well after hearing about Glenn's experience with Bean, I don't plan on a D66, that's for sure... and i'm plannin on going to stage 1's (maybe 2's), so i guess t4 mount it is! that being said, if i'm lookin to get about 400-450HP, what would work best/ be reasonably priced?

T4 is really the best choice for turbo upgrades.

If you only plan on stage 1's you can keep the stock turbo if you can have a little self control. I have Hypermax 1's and I've had mine up to 35 psi a time or two, but I have to have my foot in it for a bit to get there.
There are a ton of options out there for T4 mounted turbos. S366, H2e, or a QSSB would probably be the best options for stage 1's, for stage 2's the GQSSB may be better. Note that the H2e, QSSB, and GSQSSB are actually a T4i mount (slightly wider than a T4) but the holes in the pedestal can be ovaled out to work with the T4i mount.
I won't pretend to know nearly enough information about any of the above turbos to be helpful, it's best to search around on the various forums and read up as much as you can.
As for cost... I know you can get a new S366 with a T4 mounting kit from Irate Diesel for $2k ish. I believe that includes everything needed including IC pipes. You could also scrounge around the classifieds and piece things together to try and save a few bucks.
The 38R is always an option, but if you decide to go that route (1) you're in for the same amount of $ as a T4 kit with a turbo and (2) you're stuck with one option for turbos. Not to mention the T4 mounted turbos will perform a bit better than a 38R under most conditions.

GQQSB is good for 500 HP and stage 3's. Bit overkill. Expensive compared to the t4 setups you can get.

Stock turbo is great for stage 1's and small 2s.

I can hit 40 without an IC and stage 1's.

Stock doesn't much like over 35PSI though.

If you get a parts truck, the SD turbo is a great stage 1 upgrade.
you'll have the parts you need and can get a 38r to mount.
Expensive to do on its own though.

Fo Sho.

T4 for turbo upgrades is just the cleanest and easiest way to go.

Arighty, cool... sounds like t4 is what I'll end up doin... I figure right now I'm just plannin on stage 1's, but I don't wanna spend all that money on a turbo just to decide I wanna keep going (which is probably what will happen lol) and then have to buy yet another turbo... have I mentoned how awesome you guys are? Lol

With the t4, its easier to upgrade turbo's as well.

With stage 1's, its really not necessary to upgrade the stock turbo.

OK, something REALLY odd is going on here. Talyn agreed with me, and I agree with him...

I think I better go get my head examined.

Not when it comes to turbos!

tshrager, yes you can run hybrids detuned for less HP if you want. That's one of the benefits of hybrids, very versatile.

It's pretty straitforward.

Travis has pictures somewhere of his t4 mount from murf.

replaces up pipes and pedestal.
