I have never ever seen a Ford engine with a partial vin. The engineering number above the starter as well as the date stamp in the lifter valley are all that I have seen. As far as I know there is no narrowing it down to the exact engine that the truck came with, only that it was built around the right time to have been put in from the factory.

My M-block has the standard Casting ID down by the starter motor and a casting date on the back by the oil pressure sender, I understand there's an Engine Assembly date stamped into the front near the timing case cover but that's unsubstantiated rumor, I don't know if I ever found that on my block or not.

Not to argue with you guys.....
I had a 1968 Mercury Montego. With the partial vin stamped in it. If I knew where the warranty card was and could get a pick of the engine where it's stamped I'd show you. Here is some help to back up my statement...
Yet on the same hand ctubutis is correct as you can't narrow down a "numbers matching" car. It's all half a dozen to one type thing. So take it as you may.
