AIR BAGS DIDN'T DEPLOY

HI, someone stopped on highway.causing multiple car accident,, causing me to hit the middle cement wall divider...then bouncing off into car. with the damage seen in pictures. fire department on scene, and tow driver amazed my airbags didn't deploy.......i know there are sensors and depends on where the impact is...but does anyone else here think they should have deployed??

it wont let me post pictures here.... i can email though if anyone would care to take a look.

THANKS!!

They don't deploy during a side impact unless you have side airbags. You basically have to have a direct impact to the front bumper for your airbags to deploy.

Glancing hit it sounds like. Probably just short of deployment.

You're alive and well enough to get on the interweb....did you need the airbag?

Not having been there it would seem to us that as you were traveling down the highway, you were then forced to turn to try and avoid the other vehicles. Since you're not going to turn 90 degrees on a dime, to us you would've hit the cement at an angle and either bounced off or scraped down the cement and not hit it directly head-on.

"sudden..." Sudden compared to what you had planned, but a glancing blow, perhaps several blows, grinding along the barrier and braking before you stopped, right?

You can stop from 500mph that way without an airbag and walk away.

Or was it like this:

Turn off the sound, music is crap, crash at :20:

Yes please I want to see these pics.

Like others, I think you miscalculate the severity of your accident. You can total a car and still have no air bad deployment if you hit it right and the car is smart. In any situation regarding an accident, you are absolutely 100% better off if the bags don't deploy if your head isn't going to hit something. Airbags can cause alot of damage, people have even been killed by them going off. If you weren't heading for the steering column or the side window they made the correct choice. Also realise it will tolerate you getting bumped around a bit. Knocking your shoulder into the door or bruising your knuckles on the steering wheel are completely acceptable, a little bruising and banging is again far better than taking a hit from the air bag.

definitely better i am alive I am no expert. i just was curios is all.my driver side hit wall.then i bounced and my passenger side front ht the driver tail light section on the jeep in front of me. I heard it all depends on where the impact was. but the fire dept assisting after crash was surprised the airbags didn't deploy. Them seeing accidents every day. i assume they knew what they were talking about. I did hit door but nothing major ..could have been alot worse if i indeed left the middle row seats down the night before with the 8 bags of 80 lb concrete i had in the back end too :\ i sent someone pics to have them upload here.

When I ditched my car a few years ago the fire deparement told me the same thing. Reviewing the footage (being a transporter I had cameras in the truck) my head and body were nowhere near the steering column and had the air bag deployed it probably would have broken my right arm. Instead I walked away with bruised ribs from the sling in my seatbelt (was travelling 61mph), and a pretty bruised shoulder from hitting an item I had up acrossed the seat (which like you have realized with concrete, its never a good idea to do this). Lesson learned, even in our fancy SUV's we need to secure our cargo as if it was out in a pickup . It kind of made me realize that it's crappy these SUV's don't have hideway tie down brackets. I carried about 700lbs of servers and their racks 1.5 years ago for 980 miles in the back. Feeling them drive into the driver seat at every hard emergency stop on the interstate was unnerving to say the least.

I always tell my wife not to put anything loose in the back that you are not comfortable getting hit in the head with at 60mph.
