What are the advantages of doing that? Why would you not want the wastegate to operate properly? (trying to educate myself) I was actually reading something today about that mod and how it could possibly lead to wheel failure due to overspeed?

Your not going to over speed your turbo unless your running a hot tune making serious boost. The advantages are more boost. Disconnecting the red line might help and might not it depends on the truck. The WG on these trucks are not strong enough which is why guys disconnect the red line or tighten up the rod other wise the WG blows off too soon. Do you feel more educated now?

Tomango extracted an image of the unit from ebay, and woodnthings showed a link to the unit on Riffraff. The one from ebay is a cheesy air pressure regulator and the one from Riffraff is a proper unit. They both go on the MAP line to prevent the MAP sensor from seeing an overboost. If the MAP sensor sees an overboost, the PCM will defuel the engine (truck acceleration will wimp out).

The wastegate has a red control line going to it and the mod here is to pull the red line and plug the red line (not plug the wastegate) - or I've seen adaptors with a hole on the side installed on the red line. The unit below is a cheesy approach. This keeps the wastegate from opening at 3PSI above defuel.

Stock tune on a stock truck usually delivers 17-20 PSI boost with the go pedal moshed and everything functioning properly. With modified air in & out, my stock tune takes the boost right to 22 PSI and holds it there because I don't have a boost fooler on the MAP. Riffraff would be my call in my situation. The truck has to be modifed with a tuner or on a mechanical level (air in/out) before you sneak up on a situation where a boost fooler does anything more than take up space under the hood.

When I switch to a powerful tune, that 22 PSI is in the rearview because the tuner adds fule and overrides the PCM defueling program - now the limit is 25 PSI. This limit is set by the wastegate opening at 25 PSI. Remove and plug the red line and the wastegate will open at whatever the spring on the flapper is adjusted to. Mine is adjusted to 30 PSI and my tune is putting me there. The previous owners set this limit before I bought the truck. That boost fooler? I can still use it because the tuner doesn't override the overboost alarm and I get warnings every time I go heavy on the right foot. The fooler will kill that alarm.

matthewg - If you are on the prowl for power, there are some things that help a little, and some that help a lot. That second part... "help a lot"... involves re-tuning your engine and there is a shopping list of things that need to be done before you can safely tune. The 7.3L is heavily subdued so anybody from college students to soccer moms can drive it without hurting it, and the emissions are kept to a minimum while still keeping the ability to tow heavy. Tuning unleashes a savage beast that can hurt itself if operated improperly. If you have the coin and want real power, we can walk you through it.

I got me one of them fancy dancy 3$ air pressure regumalators at the harbor freight.
Then i stuck em on some of them hose barb fittings.
Then i stuck it in there on that little hose that goes from the thingy to the sensor doo dad.
Then i adjusted it till i didnt get the overboost code no more.

Buts i hads gauges before i mucked with ANYTHING that enhanced performance!

All that stupid thing does is give a fake/bad reading to the sensor. With a custom tuned chip you don't even need one. And it is GROSSLY over priced. You can build your own for less than half that much.

Secondly, that powerstrokehelp guy is a tard. Some stuff he's spot on, others he's just whacked out. There are much better sources (and products) out there.

And IMO... I'd ditch the tuner you have for some form of custom tuned chip. Personally I recommend the Hydra.

Welcome to FTE.

Just remember if you make the jump to a real tuner your going to need gauges! Without them your flying blind!Good luck!

I actually wired my wastegate shut with baling wire (as a test) and saw no boost increase on my gauge. Perhaps my 7000' elevation has something to do with this, but I don't blame my wastegate for lack of boost.
