truck broken?

Hey guys new here and new to the 7.3 also. I just bought a 2002 f350 4x4 today i was testing to see if it worked and i have a problem i think.

I was in the mud 4x4 on when my truck got stuck, the thing is that it felt like it was in 4x4. The indicator said so, the truck felt heavy like it was pulling a locomotive, (i had it in 4x4L) but when it got stuck the front wheels were not turning. The back wheels were spinning but nothing from the front. Is this normal? or is it broken?

Like i said i don't know much about the car but it felt like it was in 4x4, i heard the hub do something that sounded like engaging, any ideas whats up? O its a 4x4 manual, not electronic with auto tranny.

I hope when you engaged the 4x4 in low low you put the tranny in neutral. Congrats on the truck by the way.

If you have manual hubs, did you get out and turn the hubs to lock?

edit::: ok i figured it out, no the hubs are not manual atleast i don't think so, the 4x4 is manual, or so i think. I have the lever on the flor not the little switch on the dash.

Does this means that my seals are bad?

ok so i think one or both hubs are bad. Another stupid question, on the hubs is forward on or off? like when i turn them forward does that mean 4x4 is now engage? i started messing with them by hand and now the 4x4 won't turn off.

I think before you go out and just "try" stuff, you need to read up or look on the Internet to educate yourself on what you have or are trying to do so that you don't break something. Do what you want, it's your truck. Just my .02 cents!

Yup... find the owner's manual or download it, then have a cup-o-jo while you read it.

ok got it figured out. the manual doesn't say if my hubs are manual or not, it was written for all f350 of that year, it does say in one page to manually lock hubs if i have manual hubs so i guess i do. Can someone tell me the code for manual hubs to see if i have them?

I do seem to be having a problem with my 4x4 indicator. Sometimes is turns on, sometimes it doesn't even when i know i got it locked incause all 4 wheels are pulling, what could be causing that?

If you have a manual 4x4 (which you do) then your hubs are manual. They will say "free" and "lock" on them assuming the paint didnt rub off. Turn the clockwise to lock. They will need to be in the "lock" position, or 4x4 wont work.

ok cool i noticed the fading paint indicating which way to lock them, but for some reason the 4x4 indicator on the dash won't turn on at times, and the truck is clearly in 4x4 or i would not have been moving.
