Buying a used 2011 5.0 or 2010 5.4, thoughts?

Fellas,
I may be dumping the F250 for something that makes a little more sense. I would like to keep my purchase around 30K and have narrowed it down to 2 trucks that i like.

Truck 1 $29,777:
2011, F150, 5.0 V8, XLT, 4x4, 3.55 rearend, 21556 miles
http://hixsonhasit.com/Louisiana/For...Truck/8986388/

Truck 2 $29,985:
2010, F150, 5.4 V8, XLT, 4x4, ? rearend, 36098 miles
Used 2010 Ford F-150 XLT (Silver Truck) Louisiana

As of right now I am feeling that the 2011 5.0 is the better choice and have read many positive reviews. However, I know of several 5.4s out there that get the crap worked out of them and keep going. I am looking for a good reliable truck that I won't have to dump a lot of money into. You will notice the 2010 is a little more fancier than the 2011, that doesn't carry much wait with me. The '11 has a 3.55 rear end so I suspect i will suffer on low end torque, not sure wich rearend the '10 has in it.

Please give your thoughts and suggestions, or anything else to consider. Again, looking for a all around reliable and good vehicle. Future mods will consist of leveling kit and 33ish" all terain tires, something to give her a beefy look. Possibly a tuner, CAI, cat back exhaust, but that will come later down the road....

Thanks - any input is appreciated.

Jay

I would go with the 5.0. Not to try to push my opinion on you but I think those prices are pretty high if you ask me. I bought my 2011 FX4 for 34 new. And it has leather, 20" wheels, 3.73 with locker, heated seats, remote start, etc. Might do some looking around and you might find a lot better of a deal for around $30. Like maybe a new XLT with a few more options like the neat LCD productivity screen

Neither?

In just a few months you'll be able to get more for your money when the next model year comes out. 2011 will drop in value and you'll be able to get a better equipped truck for same amount.

This is one time when patience might be your best choice.

Fellas,
Thanks for the input, if i go with one of these it will most likely be the 2011. What do y'all think would be a good price for that truck?

Both the previous posts make a some good points, but out of the 2 choices you gave, I think the '11 is the better one. I love my 5.4, but the 5.0 has it beat hands down when it comes to power and mileage. It has beefy internals, and should offer reliability akin to the 5.4. The 3.55 gears should work well, too, as long as you don't get too crazy with the tires.

What do you think a reasonable price would be for the 2011?

I don't know, these prices seem high.
I special ordered my 2012, got it with 2.9 miles on the odo and paid $34,000. It's an XLT screw 4x4 HD payload / max tow / 6.5ft bed / rear view camera with the EB engine. So a 5.0 would have been around $33K. At a $3K or so difference I'd get a brand new truck. If I'd subract HD payload on top of the engine, it would have been just over $31K.

Looking at KBB at my area code, looks like the price is about right.

29-30K for private party at excellent condition. Dealer usually cost more for their business.... So 29K for 2011 might be fair since the other 2010 is priced the same with more miles on it.
The used market in F150 holds the value well, so I don't see this as a concern being priced at high end.

funny you say that i feel my 2010 5.4 out pulls the bosses 2011 5.0. i have towed with both and think the 5.4 with the 6 speed is the better towing truck. but hay thats just my point of view.

back to OP's question, both truck seem like nice trucks look at it like this the 11 is newer and has one more year of deprecation left in its life. lol good luck in what ever you get!

These prices are high but they seem to be consistent with used car prices all over. For me, both offerings have waaaay too many miles on them to pique my interest.

But if you were to pin me against the ropes and ask the same question then I would say, go with the 2011 and offer 20% below the asking price. They probably got it at auction real cheap or low balled the fella who traded it in.

My gut says to wait till the 2013's are due out and strike one hell of a deal on a brand new 2012.

given a choice between THOSE two trucks, i'd take the 2010.

the 2011 is very likely a rental. it did not come with the factory tow package, so on that basis alone it is out for me.

yes, it has a hitch, and yes the wiring harness can be added, BUT ... it will not have the internal wiring at the fuse box, nor will it have the upgraded radiator, trans cooler, or the "select shift" all associated with the factory tow package. a hitch does not a tow package make ....

very few entities buy a truck, do not haul or tow with it, put 20k on in a year, and then trade it in .... SCREAMS rental.

if i needed a truck right now, i'd look at the 2010 as a better place to park my money. Probably a lease return, rather than a rental, and it has the factory tow package.

feel free to take my $0.02 and put it toward your truck purchase

The used car market is the worst it has been in like..ever really. Gas prices have made 20 year old civics and accords still worth 8 grand, and the rest of the used car schema has followed. Those two are overpriced for their mileage and features being used. Right now, if it's under 3 years used, it needs to be new.

Odd, I've pulled with an 09 and a 12. The same skidder. The 5.0 had it beat hands down. Both were running 3.55's.

I think I'd try to buy new. You might get the same truck for just a few dollars more.

I also vote for new. We paid 32,600 for my wifes left over 2011 ecoboost crew cab 4x4 xlt, plus you can usually get a better apr on a new one if you are borrowing money for it.
