Here in New Mexico I have been told a couple things. Old car dealers say take the truck to the DMV, let them inspect the VIN, and either file for lost title through a title company, or fix up the truck, then pay taxes on a reconstructed vehicle.

One way is an original title and between $150 - 350, the other is much less expensive, but I am not sure what kind of title they get...whether it states 1950 truck, or 2012 reconstructed vehicle.
