1996 XLT Bronco, 5.0, 5 spd manual, 140k miles....
It lost power slowly and eventually dies at end of highway onramp. Completely stock, well serviced and maintained, no aftermarket parts or cheap replacement parts.....at appx. 3k rpm it sputtered and only idled. I turned it off, it idled but floated between 500 and 800 rpm, when I applied gas it sputtered and died.......hasn't started since. I can hear the fuel pump turn on when I turn the key.....pulled three different spark plugs and they are bone dry......any advice is greatly appreciated.
Put a fuel pressure gauge on the Schrader (tire) valve on the fuel rail, and make sure you have gas in the tank. Also, change the fuel filter and see if there's any gas in the vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator (FPR) - it's the chrome flying saucer on the fuel rail near the return line fitting.
Yeah.........guess I should relay my experience.....it was only the fuel filter, I checked for fuel in the vacuum line at the injector rail....which was a freebie.....next I replaced the fuel filter for about $10.....and after about 20 seconds turning the key...it came back to life......thanks for the "things to check" list.......I read some postings of people immediately going to the fuel pump....but I wanted to check the least expensive things first....makes perfect sense to me......this is a great sight!! I have referred several friends already.
