Ever heard of Steelhead Extension Bumper?

This is the bumper that was on my '75 Camper Special when I aquired it from my father. I believe they were made by a company located in Eugene Oregon called Image Fabrication? You pull the lever on the passengers side, behind the bumper and it releases two pins - on on each side - that allows the bumper to slide out when a camper is on the truck. It also has a spare tire cable that secures the tire under the bumper. I had to remove this in order to remove my rear fuel tank...and this frickin' thing is HEAVY! I am guessing in excess of 200lbs. diamond plate steel is thick, the 2" square tubing is thick, it is all welded and it is a ball buster to move around. On the positive side, it would take a hard hit to do damage when it is mounted on the truck.

I have no camper...and there is no way I am going to try and get this thing back on the truck. Instead, I have decided to install a Class IV hitch and a standard step bumper.

Why the story? Well, I am considering putting it on craigslist and have no idea what they sell for. Has anyone sold one or bought a used one? If so, what kind of price did you pay/get for it?

Thanks.

Can't say but you might show that picture to a fab shop, blacksmith, farm equipment repair kind of shop and ask them what they would estimate to build one. Then ask about half or what ever pleases you ,of that cost and it might sell. Looks like it was a good idea for somebody that used there truck for other uses and needed the protection for a camper if it stuck out a lot. Good luck .

Good idea.

The idea of the extension was to allow for towing when the camper was on the truck and to use the center as a step when getting in and out of the camper.

I will see what I can find out.

Steel head bumper

Yes I have. I believe Albert Martin was the name of the man who owned the company who built these. He was the Father of Lee Marvin who raced a mid engine corvair at Eugene speedway. Albert sold the patent to my Uncle Dale Reynolds in the early 80's then he built them into the 1990's until he retired. I do not know if he sold the rights to them or not but my cousin is building mill equipment out of the old facility. I would put on a sticker price of $250 or so and go from there but being off a 1975 ford its main carriage will be for the older frame width for bolting up and will not be easy to adapt to newer rigs. and yes they are heavy moved many of them around my uncles shop when I was a kid.
