I am personally glad I focused my tuning energies away from the "canned" tunes. These tunes come in a box with plenty of marketing behind them and they are mass-produced. They just blow fuel without focusing on the nuances of the engine. There are a number of programmers out there that spend time scrutinizing the performance of the 7.3L on their tunes and they really dial them in. I don't know all the custom tuners, but I know mine - DP has excellent customer service and the 60e Mountian tune gets it done for my driving environment.

As for the noise under the hood (as opposed to out the back), the 7.3 is no hushpuppy. It can be modified (for not much money) to reduce the decibles. Mine went from the front drowning out the back, even when standing in the back - to the back drowning out the front, even when standing at the front. Exhaust leaks were the biggest culprit, then it was air in the oil and fuel lines (fuel design flaw and tired HPOP).

Hope the reputation of the 7.3 is accurate as this was the deciding factor on this truck.

Ordered all the filter and Amsoil I need to change all fluids out. Now the question, on the 6.0 I was told not to change Air box / filter as the stock one flows enough for the truck. I get a felling that the little one in the 7.3 is not in the same boat. I have done some reading on what other are running but wanted to see what everyone though was the best option for me. Not planning on doing any modes except a possible tuner as MPG is the most important thing on this truck.

So with MPG in mind first off what is the best option for air filter?
Next what are the best mods for increasing MPG? tuner? exhaust? I really only need options that will save enough in the long run to pay for the mods. FYI this is not a truck I plan on ever selling I tend to keep my trucks until they die and hope with the 7.3 this thing will out live me.

Thanks

Have you been in the 6.0 threads to see what they say about you 10mpg? I would think that it would be a little higher than that.

With my 7.3, I can run around 14-16 in tow mode and the low 20s range in high preformance mode (I drive with an egg under the pedal). I do run a SuperChip that is off the shelf. A DP Tuner is the main one recommended as the best and I would say to go with that. Make sure that you have no boot leaks. and run the truck just at or below 2,000 rpms for the best mpg. The Chip Mod will pay for its' self if you have a light foot. The Chip may cost you a lot of money in new tires every few thousand miles if you have a lead foot (there is nothing like laying some rubber on the pavement like there is in a 7.3, F-250) .... but you will have a nice perma-grim on your face all of the time

I can second that. The 60e is great for fuel economy and has enough oomph to get past the slugs without a struggle. There are aggressive tunes, but I have no interest in those. My 80e is spunky enough to knock the testostometer (boost) deep into the fun zone right freaking now and still deliver good economy with a light foot. The animal in me squeals like a little girl and I have a profound urge to pound my pecks every time I puff past the pokies.

Your FICM on the 6.0L needs to be replaced or repaired. You probably ran the batteries out once and it didn't like it. Swamps can redo it or altra 40, I think its called, redose them and they have better response and better MPG. You really need to go on the 6.0L section if you haven't been there.

If you check out the Diesel Power magazine, they go over how to repair your own FICM for like 500 bucks.

Hope it helps.

OK a little feedback now I have truck in hand and put a few hundred miles on it. When the truck arrived from NC (bought unseen, well only pictures) It has the 4 inch exhost, AIS,tranns cooler in front of the radiator, and a single pod guage with transmisson temp. I have ordered the 3 pod and 2 more gages, boost and pyro. Once in I will be getting a tuner.

My MPG around town was 16.2 and Hwy was 18.4 as she sits. Hoping with tuner to get her closer to 20 on HWY.

Thanks for the heads up on the 6.0 and the Crapy MPG I figured it was the 4.10 rear and first year 6.0. Will jump over to the 6.0 foumes and see what they have to say also.

Glad you like the new to you truck. With those kind of mpg your doing great. You'll love the tuner but don't exspect to much increase on mpg. If it stays the same with all the extra power you will recieve I'd be happy. I got increase mpg on the freeway but in town stayed the same. I also don't get as good as you stated with my dually.
