Question Well, crap-ola Turbo***** New turbo?

I finally find the 1" 3m pad to clean the turbo around the posts where the vanes hook on the posts.

Cleaning away, happy as a clam. Pad grabs a post, and wouldn't you know it. It broke off one of those posts! SNAP, GONE!

Taking the turbo out wasn't bad, now this!

Any thoughts?

DAMN!!!! That sucks. You're not going to like this, but the only way that part is serviced, is a complete turbo.

You MIGHT be able to work your way around this, if you can call up your area Ford dealers to see if they sold any 6.0L turbos recently, that they have cores of, sitting in their core return bins. If you do luck out, you should offer the parts guy some $$$ to take it off your hands in exchange for your broken housing. At least whatever $$$ you offer him, will stay be way cheaper than the cost of another turbo.

If it's any consolation, you're not the only one who's done this.

Thanks Mike, that was just freaky to say the least. That was the last part I thought would snap!

I'll call my local ford dealer and see what they have. Thank you for the idea.

If you do manage to score another exhaust housing, may I suggest you bring it to a sandblast or bead blast tank before installing it? That will clean it up much better and faster than using a grinding disc.

Haven't found one. And yes, sandblasting would have been a lot better. I really wasn't making much head way with the pads. Also, the other side is very pitted. Wasn't getting any where with that side.

post with pictures of exhaust side.

The original owner rarely drove this truck. Had 28,000 on it in 09 when I bought it.

The turbo I just pulled out of it was the 3rd one. 1 original, then 2 replacements. All in 5 years.

Well, the Wife was standing there when it happened. We both were stunned. She said, "What does this mean?" I said craigs list. Mike suggested I look around.

Wife said, "Why get a used part, and clean it up. Wouldn't a new one be better"

Well, of course.

Ordered this:

Riffraff Diesel: Garrett PowerMax GT3788VA Turbo 04-07

Isnt it the unison ring that has the post's?
I thought I saw somewhere where you can buy replacement unison rings.

Never mind brain fart!!!!
I remember now, the post's are cast into the housing and the unison ring is slotted.

I was stunned that it broke below the surface. I was using a drill. I couldn't believe I had enough torque to break it off. Here is a picture of the posts.

Maybe better that it broke in your hand when it did and not out on the highway somewhere with 2,000 rpm on the engine .... not to mention if you're towing your 5th.
