HOW DO I VERIFY THE YEAR OF A TRUCK BASED ON VIN?

first digit of the vin will be an 8 - feel free to post your vin, there isn't anything we can do malicious with it, and we will decipher and tell you engine size, etc. if you can get the firewall stamping as well that will give you the paint color, birthday etc. Also the plant off the data tag. There is quite a lengthy thread on the cutoff between 49 and 50 that turned into everyone post their VIN regardless of year, in fact we'd rather you post your vin (even if you don't buy it) here so we can help you best:

The cab is a "part" meaning it can be changed out... and in 63 years it happens a lot more than not. If you can get the serial number off the frame that's the one law enforcement will go by. The cab may have once belonged to a 49 or 50 (from your serial number it was not a 48, but either a 49 or 50).
Take a look at my posting to the master list - you see the decode there and the sample pix of the frame, data tag, firewall stamp etc.

The big thing is what year does the title say... Breaking down the serial number is as fallowed
9 - 49 or 50
7H - Inline 6
C - 1/2 ton f1
179597 - serial number
I think yours is a '49 and your serial number is 454 more then mine.
Was this on the firewall in the engine compartment or in the glove box?

the big question I would have does he have a title and registered? Have him take a video of the truck with a news paper of that day that you can plainly see. We have a lot of people on here that would be willing to go look at it for you a lot of times if it's near them. Might get a good idea of what it really looks like...
Is there a branch on the ID tag next to the Serial Number? That is where the truck was built, this is what a Patent Plate looks like it's under the hood.
And this is Rated tag and is attached to the glove box
You can also ask for pic of the frame stamp too.
if you want one of us one here to look at what he sends you. Just ask and we can give you our opinion about what it is and what we think of it... Everyone on here is very helpful!

48-50 had the same body style. If the truck was put together from pieces, you could potentially have three different "VIN" numbers. One stamped on the frame (right frame rail before the front axle), firewall tag, glove box tag.
You'll need a wire brush and a flashlight to find the numbers stamped on the right frame rail. I believe that anything over 200000 or 250000 is considered to be a 1950. Ford didn't change the "VIN" tag sequence between 49 and 50 production years.
Where in California is the truck?

Hmmmm, is THIS http://media.collectorcarpricetracke...0378740947.pdf the truck? http://collectorcarpricetracker.com/.../200378740947/
Island girl, I'd be very careful dealing with this one. As you can see, that serial# is from a '49 F1 that sold a few years ago on eBay for $16K. Somebody with a truck of that value would not make a mistake on the year. Unless you can have somebody you trust physically inspect the truck and verify the information I'd steer clear of this deal.
