Down Side to Diablo and 87 Octane

I am new to the trucking mod world and I just discovered the Diablo Chip. While reading the specs I noticed there is an option to get the benefits of a chip and keep using cheaper low-octane fuel.

Without more information, I wonder what the down side to using lower octane is?

I understand higher octane burns more efficiently for these chips, but if the program is written to compensate for the lower octane then I don't see why everyone wouldn't want it.

Anyway, this is my first post and I am glad I found this site. I am a sport shooter and own several Glock handguns and they have a site called Glock Talk which is as thorough as FTE.

Low octane will not give all the benefits. The only thing it will give you is transmission shift firming and raised shift points. If you want more horsepower you must run a premium fuel tune (ie, if you wanna play you gotta pay).

I knew there had to be something to it.

I sent you an email before posting but I wasn't sure if you read those as quickly as here so I will reprint my question in this thread:

I just bought a 2003 F-250 SD with Ext Cab. It has a 5.4L with Auto Transmission. I want to get an Diablo chip but wanted to run the details by you. I noticed in another thread someone had a 2003 5.4L (not an F250) and you told them the ECU had been changed and no longer took chips.

Can you point me in the right direction?

I want overall performance improvement for local and highway driving. Ever so often I might put 1000 pounds in the bed and rarely tow.

The only Mod to date is a MagnaFlow Cat back dual.

Thanks for any advice you can recommend.

In the Navigator and Expedition it changed, not in the F150. The Diablo chips will still work with the 2003. Check out the FAQ I wrote, everything you always wanted to know about chips:

Thanks for the info and the patience for a newbie. I know my questions may be repeats and I will try to use the search when possible.

Sometime this weekend I will get the code and send you an order for the Diablo Delta (2-stage).

Sound like from your FAQ I would be smart to get the 4-bank or is that automatic if my ECU will accept?

I looked in the door on the Sticker and the only number that looked remotely close to the ones I have seen here was 3F714.

I will get the box out and get the number right from it later.

The code is KFK1 ... I was looking at the wrong sticker.

This sticker was in the hinge area and very small with the code wriiten in big bold letters and numbers.

I just placed an order for the Diablo ... thanks for all your help on this and other posts about the chips.

I was out at Fun Ford Weekend today and after seeing all the mods ... I knew I had to do it.

I should have it in by the weekend - if I get the thumbs up from MoterHaven.
