I have finally decided to give up my diesel 7.3 for something "practical". I have horses so I need a truck but mostly just commute in my vehicle. I have narrowed it down (I think) to a 2009 Lariat with 19k miles with the 5.4 and a 2011 XLT with 25k miles with the 5.0.
I have had two before Lariats so am used to the creature comforts but the 2011 is about 3k cheaper and it is newer. The lie-o-meter says it is getting (so far) 3 mphs better and that was with me stepping on it. I am getting killed on the trade in ( keep rolling negative equity ) so the price is a factor but not the decided one.
What would you go with for mostly commuting and a little towing (two horse bumper pull and hopefully soon a boat)?? The 5.0 has nice power but I like the more torque of the 5.4 too. I definately like the a/c in the seats on the Lariat but I dont need it. If I was buying the one I really wanted it would be the 2010 King Ranch but it just too pricey with my negative trade-in.

If you don't mind my asking, what kind of price are you looking at? The reason for the question is, right now, you can get a really nicely equipped 2013 model (brand new) alot cheaper than you might think. I know that used F150's can be pricey, I mean they hold their value really well. I think it would be worth looking around the net and seeing what's out there, Ford has alot of incentives right now and the dealers are pushing to get the remaining '13's off the lots.

Just bought a new 2014 F150 XLT w HD payload pkg. Got the 5 l.t ext. cab w 8 ft box. That pkg. has 3.73 gears. Wanted the 8 ft box as i put a pop up truck camper in it and go get lost in the woods. Pull a 16ft. alum. boat. Even loaded up probably dont have 2000. lbs to pull. I needed a truck and couldnt wait for the 2015. Sales people couldnt tell me if that payload pkg. would be aval. on the 2015. I really liked the new Gm Hd. as on the ext. cab all 4 drs. are now hinged at the frt. I am not partial to any brand, have owned all 3 over the yrs. I would have had to go to a one ton with the ram as to get a 8 ft. box a crew cab would have needed to be ordered, Believe it or not the F150 I ordered has a payload capacity of 200lb more than the ram 2500 crew w 8 ft. box. The f150 I bought has a 2400lb. payload. No rebates on 2015 Ford SD or the GM HD so on advice of local mechanic here in chetek Wi. He thought the 5 lt. in the f150 would out pull the 5.4 lt. in my 06 SD. I looked at the F150 with options needed. I traded in my 2006 SD,ext. cab w 8 ft box. Had the 5.4 Lt w the same 3.73 gears. Both are 4 wh. The 06 handled my loads just fine, into the wind it would shift to often.I couldnt just lock it in 4th gear. used tow haul but shifting back and forth was a concern I had. Mileage was not good. Into the wind saw as low as 9 and with the wind got 11.5 one day. just seemed like I always traveled into the wind and 10 was about the norm. Remember I didnt have but 1800 lbs loaded in the bed, pulled the alum. boat at 2000lb . Me and the 2 labs in the cab, the reason for the ext. cab. I think that set up would have been better with 4.10 gears. Heres my questions for ya all. On the 06 SD ball joints needed to be replaced and I had way to many brake problems. All calipars and rotors replaced, and now again the left rear calipar isnt releasing. I took it all apart and greased slided, but its not right, truck has only 39800 mi. on it. Mechanic in town suggested I dr. it at least weekly and shouldnt have brake problems. But I still did. At least the F150 wont be so expensive to run around empty with as the 250 SD never saw over 14 mpg. even empty. Are these problems common to the F150 as well? Ball joints ,brakes? Any heads up would be appreciated. I know this was kind of winded, but hey I am retired got alot of time and there is still 18 inches of snow on the ground here in N. Wi. Thanks Ken

I had a 2007 FX4 with the 5.4L and i will tell you there is no comparison to my 11' FX4 Ecoboost when it comes to towing. The 5.4L could not pull the same grade hill as the Ecoboost and maintain speed . And as far as the ecoboost being stressed, keep in mind that the ecoboost even though a V6 is still built with much, much ,much stronger internals than the 5.4L. Yes the engine might have high cylinder pressure compared to the 5.4L but it is built to handle that pressure. If you were to put a supercharger or turbo on the 5.4L with its stock internals then you might worry about having problems with engine stress.Dont get me wrong, I loved my V8 and still miss the roar of that engine! I have always believed in the old saying "There is no replacement for displacement" That is until now ....

I'm sure you'd get more power, but that would come at the expense of fuel economy. And then you'd have to build a drivetrain to handle that power, which I suspect the current one isn't up to.
I wouldn't pay extra for an EB 5.0. The 3.5 makes more than enough power to tow far heavier than the chassis is rated for.

That sounds like an SVT type of thing, wouldn't mind seeing that available in a Lightning-like platform. Maybe in a Mustang to give that Dodge Challenger Hellcat some competition
#57
Yeah, I can see that happening. Shame we can't get a rear-wheel-drive competitor to the Charger. Whoops, a little off topic.
#59
On the Challenger competition, isn't Ford going to be fitting the 2016 Mustang(or a version of it, Shelby GT 350(?) With the New "flat plane" V8?. I haven't heard too much about it other than it will have over 500 HP and is Naturally Aspirated. They could "detune" that and beef it up for duty in the truck platform

an v8 engine with a flat plane crank would not be very useful in a pickup.
in order to make it useful in a truck, you would lose all the benefits a flat plane crank has to offer.
I like the idea of a ecoboosted v8, but not in a half-ton. My guess is that if we ever see a turbo charged v8, it will be smaller than 5.0 liters in displacement, and will reside between the fenders of a F250/350.
