Hopefully it's cheap, because the owner probably doesn't have a lot of money left...

Well, Max nailed it. The IDS egr valve test requires the EOT to be over 185 degrees to initiate the test. Thermostat stuck open will result in too low of temperatures. As soon as the thermostat was replaced, the temps got high enough to complete the test (egr valve failed). The egr valve needs heat to operate efficiently. A thermostat sticking closed intermittently will also lead to excessive pressures (this one was as well). Replacing the thermostat and egr valve repaired the customers driveability problem, making him very happy.

No oil temp and hot coolant, it had no time to transfer heat in the radiator, was a classic when we raced.

If the coolant is held, the heads will flash boil coolant.
Just right the coolant moves through the system transfering heat in the radiator.
Stuck open the whole system gets hot or stays cold depending on the time of year.

So what did I win Vince?

So its safe to say that an EOT below 185* and the EGR Valve stays closed position

and above 185* egr valve works as advertised
