hey guys, im new to this site and could really use some advice on a cam for my .060 over flat tappet 289 with stock e7 heads, performer rpm intake and edelbrock 600 4 bbl. not trying to get alot of power just a good running motor with a lopy ( noticeable ) idle. thanks
it had a 302 roller block with 2 different truck heads, ( stupid ) i know but i got it that way, i was able to get a fresh 289 .060 over with the brand new intake and carb that i listed before for 200 bucks, going to put the e7 heads on and get a little bumpy cam for the sound and just cruise around in her.
a lopey cam, stock heads, and a 600cfm carb might not be a lot of fun to drive, especially in a truck.
don't get me wrong, i understand what you are after, but from my experience, a 600cfm carb is a lot with a stock head-ed SBF.
My advice:
Shoot for duration of 210-220* @0.05" lift, a 500cfm carb, spend some money 2000 or 2400rpm stall converter (depending on your rear gear), and enjoy the sound of all 4 barrels open at one time ... and forget about they way it sounds at idle.
If you are going to use a roller cam, you could probably shade a little higher on the duration, but if you get a long enough duration that the engine lopes, you may find that your truck is a lot less fun to cruise with, unless you go pretty deep with the gearing, and go with a pretty high stall converter ... all of which can get old on the street.
Shoot for a cam that will give you about 80% of your max torque from about 2000 rpm to about 5500rpm, and it will feel like a freight train when you lean into it.
Agree you do not want a big cam... big cam and heavy vehicle makes no fun. One thing to check out are Comp Cams "Thumper" series. They are made to produce a noticable idle but smooth out with a little RPM and produce good mid range torque. One of the smaller Thumper's may fit the bill for you.
Hey all, I've been looking at Lunati high efficiency camshafts for a 460 with no mods on the engine. anyone try one of these? What would be a good cam for this engine??
