I know it can be done, but I don't think its something you can just go to an auto parts store, put on one of these grills, and it strips it off......at least I've never seen it yet! I believe the aluminum has to be chemically stripped. I'm sure " gangstakr" can shed some light on this, if he wants to share his secrets that is!

Not much light to shed. All our aluminum pieces coated with anodizing that come into the shop, are sent out to be chemically dipped which strips anodize and paint from the piece. We then have a raw and rough looking part. At that time, all dents, dings and blemishes are fixed the parts are sanded then polished. A long and dangerous process with industrial polishers.

Yep, that's what I figured. Mine was sent off in the mid 80's to be stripped and buffed. It still looks almost new today, but that's because I polish it quit often and its out of the weather. I think it ran me around $200 back then which included shipping of the grill both ways.....its rather more exspensive today I would imagine.

There actually is a anodize remover that works well. Spray on and when it all turns white spray off. Then buff

See Pics:

Works well for something that does not exist?

you need to get the regular nasty stuff (lye)
spray a good coat on (in well ventilated area shaded )
let sit about 1/2 hour put another coat on repeat 5-6 times , yes like 3 hours
when you see the foam turning color wash with a red scotch brite WEAR GLOVES AND EYE PROTECTION)
time to fix dents and polish , i'll post a thread when i am done with mine

I've been away from the forum for quite a while. Keep tripping over "real life". My fair/good 69 Ranger grill was absconded with And I'm curious to know what it will cost to replace. I still have the center emblem.

Yeah the 69 Ranger grille in the picture, someone has! That one sold a long time ago.
