292 burning oil

Hello All,

I just picked up a 62' f-100 with a 292. I know that the truck is burning oil and was wondering is a common problem that can be fixed with a tuneup or if is in need of a rebuild.... any ideas?

Check the cylinders for cranking compression. All plugs out, carb throat propped wide open, battery with full charge, engine at or close to operating temp. That will give a lot of pertinent information. Label the plug wires so they dont get mixed up on reinstallation. Cylinder numbering begins on passenger side, front one, 2,3,and four at back. Driver side front 5, 6,7,and 8 at back.

I will do that ASAP. One thing I will say is that it has lots of power. I am wondering if it might be dried seals from sitting?

Howdy,

It could be dried (or disintegrated) valve stem seals and depending on your compression numbers, piston rings.

There is no "mechanic-in-a-can" that will fix an engine that burns oil.

GM used to say 1qt in 1000 miles was "normal" (for warranty purposes).

My 2001 VW diesel uses 0 qts in 10,000 miles and has 185,000 on it.

My 09 Honda CRV uses 0 qts in about 15000 miles and has 50,000 on it.

My 94 GM 6.5L diesel uses about 1/2 -1 qt in 5000 miles and has 194,000 miles on it.

ymmv.......

Cheers,

Rick

Do your compression check as Mike suggests by keep in mind that a COMPRESSION test is checking the COMPRESSION rings, not the oil rings. Altho more that likely if you have low compression you'll bad oil control rings also but you could have good compression and have NFG oil rings.

Does it smoke excessively while driving or just at start up? If just at start up it is probably valve seals and/or guides.

How many miles you got on that Bad Dawg. How much oil is it using?

OR, if it smokes after going down a hill with your "foot off the pedal", AND THEN stepping on the "gas"..... you're sucking oil past the guides....(big-time)
