Just bought 86 F250 Lariat 4x4 w/6.9 diesel

I finally got rid of my 1988 350 Lariat Crew cab Dually. We bought a big 40ft 5th wheel with 4 slides and is very heavy. My dually could not get it into where we are at now because it did not have 4wd. I was embarrassed when the neighbors F250 4x4 backed under it and put it right in here.
So now I have this diesel that I do not know much about. After reading a lot of these posts it seems that the diesel 6.9 is a good motor. It has 220k miles on it.
Concerns:
Am I gonna have to have a turbo to haul this 5th wheel?
I understand that the Lariat has the one tone breaking and rear end I just would like for that to be cofirmed?
I want to rebuild, I want to make sure what I have is good to go. Need recommendations, as well as what to do with a turbo. I'm even thinking of finding a power stroke and putting it in but there appears to be a lack of enthusiasm in this course of action.
I am open to all info someone may be generous enough to share and hopefully steer me in the right direction. I was recently diagnosed with cancer so money is a huge concern but I need to make sure this is in order asap!!

The IDI's are not speed demons, you probably will want a turbo if you do any towing its not a necessity but it will definetly will help with acceleration, mpgs and badassness.
The 6.9 is a good engine, you will want to make sure the coolant has sca's to prevent cavitation, look on oilburners for mel agnes post. If you want a powerstroke just get a powerstroke you can pick up the 1st gens pretty cheap on c-list.
Hope you enjoy your truck !

Well I know about cancer. Just spent 5 1/2 years in treatment. Still go for scans and trying to get better. The treatments are worst then the cancer sometimes, at least in my case. I have a 86 van 6.9 and I wouldn't try to pull 40ft 5er with 4 slides or no slides. It just don't seem to have the power. I am in the process of new IP, injectors return lines and glow plugs but I don't think it would handle it here where I live. I'd go to an early power stroke. Better brakes for one. But on the other side, maybe with a good turbo, and not alot of mountains your be okay. What kind of weight is that thing. I bet 16K or more loaded. I'd try the turbo, guys on here can really help about that. Let us know how it goes. You mit want to look for a F450 or F550.

I assume it's supposed to be one tone BRAKING as well?

Welcome to the IDI world. A turbo wouldn't hurt if you're hauling that massive trailer.

And the diesel trucks all came with the 1 ton rear axle.

What is the weight of the trailer, and what gearing do you have in the truck?

I love my 1993 F-350 crew cab, 4x4, 7.3l, 5 speed with gear vendor OD, 4.10 gears and LOTS of upgrades. I removed the factory turbo and replaced it with a larger hypermax setup. Added an intercooler, cold air intake, and 3.5'' exhaust. I have spent alot of time and money on my truck and I love it! That 40 footer is a monster!!! I pull a 26ft 5th wheel and my 18 ft aluminum boat behind it. I hauled my dads 36ft Eagle 70 miles at 65 mph with my truck and WOULD NOT want to do it very often. The IDI's are my favorite diesel engine but if you are going to be pulling that 40 footer down the intertstate, save the money and spend it on a 99-03 powerstroke. 1994.5-97 are fine but they lack an intercooler and 6 speed standards. Also, with a trailer that big, duals would be a must for me! Just my opinion but I hope it helps.

Talk about over capacity, you may need to install overloads or airbags...

Haha, I posted in the wrong thread. Though I guess it applies here, too.

How many extra leaf springs do you think I need?

Exclamation that's one big 5ver!

your going to need:
turbo
4.10 or lower gears (id personally go with 4.56)
at least one aux spring.

your going to want:
dually conversion.
hydroboost brakes.
od trans if she doesn't have one.
