Catalytic Converter Stolen from my 7.3. What are my options?

Well I will be working on the cat soon! Had to go to the Legion today to catch up on the books and come out around 3 pm, and the truck sounded funny. Got to the bank, looked under neat and a three foot section was missing. Reported it for insurance but made some calls. You can't buy an OEM cat any longer. Now that said, in California only OEM are approved. So go figure. You also can't buy them from the wrecking yard, California law. So I don't know where they are selling them. Called NAPA and they don't show one either. Is the 6.0 cat the same? Those are available but know cross check number.

Chet

Hey Jason, is the 6.0 cat the same as the 7.3?

Well crap! Bad luck Chet.

What ya do is get yourself a sawzall with a metal blade and drive around at night until... j/k

Go to the CARB Aftermarket Cataytic Converter Database and plug in the truck details. 7.3 was not an option but several part numbers showed up for other engines. So no help there.

If nobody comes up with a good option I'd find the local smog referee and ask there. Maybe a regular smog station can look it up, but I'd never trust them unless they guaranty passing smog afterwards.

Best of luck buddy!

The best option is to buy a similar model year RH rocker cover that DOESN'T say "OC". That way, your vehicle officially doesn't need an "oxidizing catalyst".

Why in hell would anybody steal a diesel cat? They ain't worth money like gasser cats must of been a newbie cat thief that saw a big kitty and though he scored.

You should have seen the black cloud that was left behind one car that lost it's cat a while back. Left a skid mark on the pavement, too.

Not all 7.3's had cats.... I know your in Kommiefornia, but what do they visually check? Can you even drive Diesels in CA anymore?
I see Cletus suggesting swapping valve covers, is it that easy? I've haven't had to deal with Emissions testing or inspections before, but I know they vary wildly....

The underhood sticker will also say if cat is needed, so might need to swap that too.

I don’t know if 6.0 is the same or not. I have a couple 7.3 cats laying around. They’ve been cut really short though. I’ll be happy to send you one for just shipping cost if you want it. Probably save on shipping if the guts fell out....

Chet, sorry to hear about the thief taking advantage of your visit to the Legion. Kind of puts people like you in a bind regarding getting the truck back to legal.

Best of luck to you sir.

I wasn't aware that any 7.3s had cats. Mine doesn't and I'm in California.
