Long time this one hasn't been active, but as with my other write-ups, it's updated now and all the pictures hosted at FTE. Fortunately this one didn't take too long to update since there aren't many pictures .

I apologize for the old thread bump, but I have a relevant question regarding the drum removal. I have a 1991 Econoline 350, SRW, and I wasn't able to remove the drum yesterday.

After removing the wheel, both the Chiltons and Ford shop manuals I have mention removing some sort of drum retaining nut. I can't find a nut that would be holding the drum in place. My guess is that it's long gone already, but does anyone know what it would look like or where it would be so I can be sure?

I'm assuming the brake shoes (and probably some rust) were actually holding the drum in place; I couldn't get them to retract using my screwdriver. But I just want to be sure I'm not missing something.

It might be helpful if you share the model-year of the truck (on edit: just noticed you did post the year). I personally found nothing retaining the drum, but my rear is a Dana 44 (As most Broncos assembled in Venezuela have) so it's probably a different setting from the 8.8.

You have a Dana rear axle, as all heavy duty vans do. I'm pretty sure that you have to remove the axleshafts in order to remove the brake drums on that axle.

Thanks, but that's not what the Chiltons or the Ford manuals indicate. Also, I don't think it is a Dana based on some quick Wikipedia reading, but I could be wrong.

I've managed to get the shoes to retract, but still no luck getting the drum to release. I assume I need a puller, but it would have to be a big one.

The drum will try to stick to the axle around the center, where the drum slips over the flange of the axle. Corrosion (rust) is the cause. I'd try using a very good rust release type of penetrating oil. Let it soak for a while then try a hammer on the drum between the wheel studs to loosen it up. Heating the area will also help with loosening it up. If really stuck, you might end up having to replace them after you get them off.

Just keep on reading those manuals. You have no need to listen to people who have actually worked on these trucks.

Thanks, that's probably what's going on.

also check the studs there may be 1 or 2 think keepers holding the drum from sliding off, most likely rusted around center.
