About three days ago, I'm sitting at a stop light when my engine RPM jumps from 550 to 1000. At first, I thought it was something to do with the air conditioner, so I turned it off. Later that day, the engine does the same thing... It jumps to 1000 again. This time, it's late in the day, so the a/c was off. The next day, I'm in stop and go traffic, and the engine jumps it's RPM again while I was rolling down the road at an idle. I danged near rear ended the car in front of me! The next time the engine acts up was while I was cruising through a parking lot, looking for a parking space. I realize this is a safety concern, so I want to take care of this asap! Any ideas of what could cause this problem?
2004 F-250, 4x4, 6.0, 301840 miles. Injectors replaced around 294,000 miles. ARP studs installed at the same time. No tuner, stock exhaust and intake.
I don't think it is the throttle position sensor, simply because they are triple redundant sensors. If feedback from the 3 don't match, you get a DTC and the truck defaults to an idle.
It might be the IPR. Those are known to cause erratic RPM. Suggest that this be moved to the 6.0 diesel forum.
