I had some small metal shavings that looked almost identical the one of the threads here. I did take it in to the dealer and Ford directed the dealer to do nothing. I found out later that this dealer has seen a few others and they believe it is likely trash from filling up.
Of course it is. Always assume that it is something that is not your fault.

I went to look at a 2011 F250 at my local ford dealer they have for sale and said it was in the service department because during inspection they found metal shavings in the fuel system... its got 96k on it. They seem to think its quite serious cause they have been waiting on parts for 2 weeks and said they are going to make like new before they sale it what all they are replacing beats me didnt really seem to wanna talk about it and try and sell me a 09.

changed mine 2 weeks ago ,15000 miles on the filters the bottom filter was a dark brown with water INSIDE of the filter , the upper filter had what looked to be metal the size of a grain of salt about a dozen pieces , just ordered a DSFF67 filter / separator from dieselsite hopefully 2 micron filtration will help
