I do not know for sure, but the PO put a 460 into my 80 Bronco, and I was told that he used the C6 that was hooked to the 351m that was in it. If that is the case your 4sp should work. Sorry I do not have a definitive answer for you.
what would i need to doa 351m to a 460 swap i know i need engine mounts and headers but will my 4speed stick mount to the 460
The bell to block pattern is the same, so you MAY be able to bolt up your existing bell and trans to the 460. I say "may" as you will need to check this set up for the proper depth, and proper pilot bushing/bearing engagement.
The trans to bell pattern is the same for all those transmissions also, the Ford "butterfly" pattern.
My buddy did one of these, swapping from a 400. The extra weight was noticable, and cooling was marginal, so consider a bigger radiator or other measures to ensure proper cooling.
OR build your 351m into a 400 with some goodies and power on for thousands less....serving suggestion, ymmv
Don't forget the 460 has a lot more torque than the 351m. Even if you were able to physically bolt your current trans to the 460, will it handle the extra torque?
The only trans problem I've had with my C6 bolted to the 460 was when I was pulling a 7000lb box trailer, did it for years before I cooked it. The C6 was bolted to a 351m before the 460.
i know of a few 460's in good runing shape that i could get for free if i could bolt it to my 4speed and drop it in this bronco i have is pretty much just a offroad rig
I swapped a 460 into my 78. I used the stock 351M C6 trans, and cooked it quickly, had it rebuilt and worked fine for many miles. Am planning on swapping in a NP435 4 speed. I bought the 460 clutch and pressure plate and I'm sure the 351M bellhousing will work just fine. I used a car motor so needed the oil pan, oil pump, brackets, and sprung for the Ultra flow headers, L&L has all of this. I got the engine for $200, running, and spent about $1200 total to get it running. If you find a truck engine you might not need new brackets. i saved myself some cash by making my own alt brackets using the bigger 95 amp alternator.
