Since you are a family man on a tight budget, are your aware of the MPG with a V10, not sure how much you plan on driving it but can you manage the 10mpg?

Here is my take on it. I bought a 1999 F-250 Lariat that had 118000 non maintained farmer miles on it in 2007. Bought it for $5000, had to put $1000 just to get it road leagal, then it was another $800 over the next year and 10,000 miles. I totaled this truck (lady ran a red light). Insurance paid me nicely, I turned around and bought a 2001 F-250 XLT with 220,000 miles on it for $4500. I drove it home 900 miles, and since then have put another 50,000 miles. I have put about $700 in maintance parts in it (unit bearing, battery, alternator, nothing of major concern). I wouldnt hesitate to jump in the truck and drive across country today. This truck is 10 times the 1999 truck was. I pull upwards of 10,000 lbs on a regular basis, and it is my daily driver. I purchased the truck with the mind set that if I need to do a tranny or motor, I'm still ahead in the long run.

Other than fuel milage, I have nothing to complain about in this truck.

BTW, both trucks were/are V-10, manual transfer case, Extend cab long bed 4x4 trucks.

Steve S.
To many to list.

That always apply. Used vehicles are not for owners who take them to dealers. Just a member on another forum took his wagon to a dealer for evaluation. Gasket here, seal there, couple CV joints, brake flush totaled $11,000 estimate on wagon with $6000 KBB value

You think it would be different on Volkswagen?
When my truck rear broke the Ford dealer wanted $11,000. Bad coincidence?

Makes sense to me, sounds like a Superduty is what you need then.

The 7.3 is a great engine but be prepared to increase your budget by 2-3x, they're not cheap. Probably not worth it imo unless you'll be increasing your trailer/load considerably.

Gas V10 10-12 MPG, PSD 17-19 MPG (if well maintained and equipped). I made this decision 18 months ago, knowing fuel will go $5, $6, $7, and so-on per gallon over the years. In a pinch, I can chug frier oil in my 7.3L. Just "food" for thought.

I've put on 30K miles since then, but if you park it the bulk of the time - gas is fine.

$0.02

Yeah. Buy a diesel and this topic never existed
Somehow on this forum we do have lot of gas lovers when it comes to diesel bashing, but I can barely see them when it comes to help with gasoline engine questions.
They don't ride quads on Thursday, do they?

200k v10

I have a 01 250 superduty v10 bought it 2 1/2 years ago. had 201000 on it then now has 222000 other than just small things it is in great shape. would drive it anywhere and not worry. great truck even with the mileage. I to went with the gas at the time cause diesels cost is much more than same gas truck.

C'mon....I know gas/fuel prices have risen in the past years but that's suicide. $5 sure, higher....not any time soon We've all adjusted our incomes to this $4 range and the companies are enjoying their profits. Why would they ruin a good thing by raising to a level that would crush their consumer? If it happens I'll eat my words but I just don't see it any time in the near future.

Heh, anyone from Europe would KILL for gas at $5 or even $6 a gallon and that very well may be where we are headed. There is a reason those guys have figured out how to get 50+mpg out of small diesel motors for many many years while people here get all excited about 40mpg hybrids that need 3 computers, huge batteries and a gerbil with a carrot in front of it to get that sort of number...

Our gov't does not set the gas prices, its the oil companies that have us by the ***** unfortunately and as demand rises more and more... well that is economics... IMHO, we need to get rid of gasoline powered vehicles altogether. Go full electric for cars with ranges that are actually usable, cellulosic bio diesel/WVO etc... for trucks and DIYers and clean coal/solar to power the whole shebang as we are the "Saudi Arabia of coal".

I ride every chance I get, if it's a Thursday it's a Thursday. And I don't know much about spending my time wrenching. I'd rather spend my time playing with my kids or making my own dough and let a pro work on it.

More importantly, to the OP, get something newer (less used) if at all possible.

Pretty funny stuff there.... LOL

Those doomsday preppers crack me up. I mean it's ok to take a few precautions in life, but good grief, you only live once, get out there and enjoy it.

If the world is coming to an end, I can't do a thing about it. I'm going to enjoy my family while they are here and teach them how to LIVE...

Thanks everyone for your replies, I really appreciate everyone's opinion on this subject.

Thanks!

Jeremiah

Isn't that what people said about $4 prices when fuel was $2?
Wait a minute. That was just a bit over 2 years ago. The World is still turning.
Happy off-roading BTW. Isn't the 90F bothering you too much?
Just yesterday sold my Honda CT70 for more than MSRP. But than in over 40 years the dollar changed the value quite a bit.
