I'm headed over this morning to talk to him so I will see what hes willing to do, he knows he messed up and seems like a straight shooter so hopefully I can get him to redo it the right way instead of welding up or redrilling...

LStasser & landshark - Please let us know how the spacer, as well as the rest of the ZF mod's, works for you. At one point I was asked to do a sticky on this, and it would be good to know if there are any problems or other issues people have encountered.

LStasser - Welcome to FTE!

I haven't had a chance to progress with my swap, everything is sitting on the floor of my garage. Probably wont get this done this until mid to late winter due to work interfering with my free time.

I have been here, that spacer found to be a burden. I just finally seen this thread(guess working getting off work then going to work then sleep will do that, thank you global warming and 0 degree temps I am sitting at home tonight)
I had my spacer made along with a much longer pilot bearing(bronze) bolted it together to get the ZF up, grab the starter and that is where failure happend.
The ZF for the 460 and distance the 400 is different spacing the flywheel back you can not just space the starter back also.
I dumped the spacer and ran with just the much longer bronze pilot bearing, I never had issues but only ran it for a couple hundred miles. I was running a redrilled(mounting bolt holes) zf 460 12.5" clutch on a 400 flywheel.
I still have everything for it, clutch, flywheel, throwout, slave cylinder, steel braided line all in new shape still, have zf too.

Hope this has helped
Curtis

Curtis - You missed the part about spacing the ring gear forward as far as it'll go, which is ~1/8". And go with a 351W automatic starter, which has a 3/8" longer throw. So, 1/8" + 3/8" = 1/2" which is the thickness of the spacer. I've checked starter engagement using Dykem and I'm getting full engagement. And, I have full engagement on the ZF's input shaft splines.

And you thought this was a wrap.

Jim has posed a question a couple of times, and the second time he finally got my attention. The question is, as I understand it, whether I am really going to bolt a chain-drive transfer case behind the ZF, which will be bolted to a somewhat-robust 400 able to provide over 500 ft-lbs and 500 HP with a stab of the loud pedal.

As background, I'm a grandfather and am unlikely to do a serious burnout in 2wd, and much less likely to in 4wd. And if I'd put it in 4wd it'll be off-road and it won't take much torque before spinning the tires so there won't be much stress on the t-case. But, I will be passing this truck down to my offspring, and there is no telling what they will do to it. (But, I have a cunning plan - I intend to build up a '50 Chevy pickup w/a mild 235. )

So, do I go for an NP205? Or the BW1356 I already have? The 205 is cast iron, so is much heavier, but is all gears. Thoughts?

If it is used as a 'Sunday' truck, traction is going to be the limiting factor.

Load a ton of stuff in it or get it stuck in stumps/mud would be a different matter.
But you say you are building this for your grandson who enjoys Pixar's
Cars, not for yourself.
