My daughter has a team mate who's dad is a detective, recently promoted from patrol duty as well.

My findings: There's a hell of a lot more going on around us than any of us really know.

Honor your local and state PD's, they deserve it.

It is as if there are multiple universes that we live in.
There is the one for the civilians.
Then there is the one that others of us step in and out of dealing with the real world.
I, for one, am one of the interfaces between the two.

Aint that the truth. I live in one of the safest suburbs of memphis in a gated complex and the cops are here on a call 4 times a week probably. Weve had shootings, car jacking, muggings, and several break ins. It got bad enough that the PD now is makinf rounds at night to show thier presence.

Wow, I admitted doing 5 over, never got caught, not no one else's problem, and still get barked at for it.

No barking here my friend....just offering possible explanations to your questions. You asked for a police officer on the forum and I'm answering.

Don't sweat it bro. I only know of a handful of people that actually drive the posted speed. The majority of us push the envelope as far as it will go.

In my opinion, if you are on a freeway and driving 10-15 MPH over and not weaving in an out of traffic and acting like an ***, then nothing should be said unless of course you shouldn't be driving at all or are driving improper equipment.

About 5 years ago, I was traveling along Rt 460 in Va which is four lane but rural through small towns. The posted speed was 50 in this section. I was cruising with a pack of vehicles, 7 of us maybe and we were doing about 57. The County Sheriff picked me out of the pack and cited me for speeding.

I knew I was wrong but I asked him why he picked me instead of someone else as we were in a pack. We were all driving sensibly, no one was weaving in and out and no one was being an idiot.

He told me I was getting a ticket and to simply sit there and keep my mouth shut as well as a few other things. Disrespect doesn't work well with me as I was very polite and sincere in my question. I asked him for his badge number, computer ID number, vehicle number and the name of his supervisor.

I explained that I wasn't disputing the ticket, I earned it. But I will not be disrespected by anyone.

I never pursued the issue but I do drive the posted speed in his jurisdiction now.

I'll add that speed differentials are probably as dangerous, if not more so than exceeding a posted speed limit. This of course assumes we're not over those limits far enough to make avoiding an accident impossible!

Keeping with the flow of traffic apart from Tseekins experience seems to be acceptable, again assuming its NOT too fast to be safe or all bunched up like a green flag restart. Safety first!

I've always heard while on freeways or more well traveled roads with somewhat high traffic about 10 mph over is the absolute limit for being stopped just for speeding. That's certainly set in stone but in order to keep traffic moving it seems to work here in my city and state. Construction zones, city streets where schools or narrow roads deserve lower speed limits to keep others safe.

I've been busted doing 67 in a 55 zone (country road), 55 in a construction zone (45 limit), even once with a radar detector back when the national limit was 55 everywhere.

I guess if we all drive within the limits we're less likely to be stopped and cited. Then again sometimes we're subject to being stopped for reasons we'll never know.

i got stopped once by a trooper for obstructing traffic.
i was in the right lane doing the posted 55 mph. everyone else was doing the normal nj turnpike 90+ mph. i asked the trooper to put the speed i was traveling at on the ticket, and he did.

the trooper that gave me the ticket never showed up in court.
i asked the judge what obstructing traffic meant and he told me driving too slow.
i asked him how i could be driving too slow if i was doing the speed limit, 55 mph in a 55 mph zone. .

he dismissed all charges.

A retired Oregon State Trooper told me, "I do not care about someone doing 10-12 mph on the interstate as long as they maintain their lane and do not drive erratically, if I see continual lane changes, speed changes, tailgating, I will light em' up everytime."

I got stopped today. I was in a wealthy rural area. I was driving southbound and they were going northbound. They did a u turn and followed me about a mile.

They pulled me over, asked for my info and the passengers info, asked what I was doing, where I was coming from, how long I was there, where I was going to, where I lived, where I worked, and WHERE WE EVER IN PRISON.

I then said that my brother is a cop. They then told me that I was stopped for window tint. They checked that it was legal and sent us on our way.

My helper and i are clean cut, clean shaven, and no tattoos. I believe they saw my old truck with some scrap material from the jobsite and suspected we were copper thieves.

If that is the case, I would rather them be honest about the stop then lie to me. They do not like us lying to them, what makes them special?

This is my truck.

You brought the situation to yourself not the trooper.
Why are you in such a hurry?
The Best advise ever when dealing with a cop on a moving violation "routine trafic stop" KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT!!!

You are not required to answer any questions, and as a matter of fact, being silent is constitutionaly protected! Nothing you can say can justify speeding, you have a 50/50 chance of getting off with a warning, but your statisticly gauarenteed to incriminate yourself and admit guilt if you talk, making the LEO's job easier.

I have spoke with many LEO's (5-10ish) on this subject. They need you to admit guilt, so thats why all the questions. Then they fish for more charges...
Just keep your mouth shut!
