Dont mean to sound stupid but I see all this talk about dummy plugs and such. I try to search the stuff but don't really get an answer. Just trying to get a better understanding of my truck and also to maybe have a clue what you guys are talking about some of the time.

I'm so glad you asked as I have wondered the same thing. All I know is 2003 to early 2004 either do not have them or have a better style because I don't think we have to replace them on those years.

Well, what year do you have first?

Stand pipes are the pipes the supply oil into the oil rails for the injectors. Since the oil rails are the same left to right they have to holes in them. The front hole on either side is not used so they have a plug to keep oil from flowing out of them. Those are the dummy plugs.

The STC fitting is a quick clip fitting the plugs into the HPOP (High Pressure Oil Pump) and supplies oil to the HPO system!

Randy, you are correct '03 and early '04 have a different setup then late '04 and up!

You have to get '05 up to have the STC fitting.

The best way to explain it is to Youtube sct fitting on a powerstroke 6.0. It is easier to actually see the part instead of reading it and trying to picture it in your head. trust me it helped out alot. Thanks to youtube i learned how to rebuild my oil cooler and replace injectors

From the 2004 book:

So is it an improvement to have this STC fitting
If so WHY?
I would assume it makes disassembly easier but may create a weak link...

OK, I've been watching this and finally understand what it is. Why do I have to do this? I understand I don't have to do it but what are the bennies? Already done EGR cooler and valve delete. The way it sounds is I'll be diving back into the top of the motor and accessing the oil cooler. I really want this truck to last. Change oil/ fuel filters like clockwork. Coolant filter, flush and fill coolant. Brake and Power Steering flush. CCV reroute soon. ARP studs and new head gaskets soon, although mine are good. Planning on setting them on the shelf until "THE DAY". Please enlighten all of us that are on the outside looking in! Nothing in the tech guides either.
Texastech_diesel thanx for the insight and pics. I should have asked the same ? that DesMoinesDieselDuty did but was trying to figure it out on my own like Randy777.

so is this something that is done as preventative or as a result of a failure, or as an upgrade?

There are upgraded parts for the dummy plug, stand pipes, and STC. Some do it as a preventative deal. I always recomend replacing the dummy plug and stand pipe on any side that I have to do injectors on since they will already be out to change the injector. Others upgrade after they fail.

What happens is the O-rings start to leak causing a no/hard start when the truck is warm. And in some cases will a NO start even on a cold motor. So lots of guys don't want to wait untill they are stranded to do the upgrades, and just do it as a preventative measure.

ok so I have a question. I am doing the standpipes and dummy plugs along with a bunch of other stuff. Today I received my parts. I ordered the standpipe kit(comes with both dummy plugs and both standpipes) it also had a small cap plug with it. What is this for?

The small plug goes in the driver's side rail. It's where the ICP would go if it was the passenger side rail. The green o'ring is for the ccv tube that goes in the driver's side valve cover.
