1996 Ranger Chokes on Acceleration And Starts Hard
About a month ago, my fuel pump died and my mechanic replaced it.
Since then, in order of occurrence:
He just replaced the sensor to get the Check Engine light to go off, but I think the sensor is probably doing it's job and the fuel pump was installed incorrectly or is failing. Am I right? Could it be something else (e.g. fuel filter or fuel lines)?
Since then, in order of occurrence:
- The fuel gauge won't read anything over a quarter tank of gas.
- When I pump gas, the nozzle keeps clicking off, as it the tank is full.
- It takes a few turns of the key to get fuel to start the engine.
- The truck has begun chocking and surging when I accelerate.
- And, now the Check Engine light has come on. The OBD code is P1311, which I looked up on obd-codes.com and means Lack of Upstream Heated Oxygen Sensor Switch - Sensor Indicates Lean - Bank No. 1.

Could it have been P1131????

Was the fuel filter replaced?
Recently replaced my fuel pump (steel stubs were rusted and leaking). Between the corrosion on the plug connector for the pump and all the crap that I drained out of old fuel filter, I'm surprised the truck even ran.
Idles much smoother now.

It would make sense that the filter would be full of crap. I use my truck for deliveries and end up running it close to empty a lot.
I'm going to have to start learning to do some of this stuff myself: How To Change Ford Fuel Filter - YouTube

Sounds like you probably have more than one problem, as a number of things can cause a P1131, so we'll need some more info to make a more focused guess as to the probable root cause of your P1131, posted driveability problems & fuel level indication problems.
Post All trouble code Numbers you had, or currently have, as they can offer up good trouble shooting clues.
Where is the vehicle on All past & present due scheduled maintenance call outs????
What engine do you have & how many miles on it.
Did the driveability problem come about suddenly after some event, or slowly over time????
Did you have the fuel level reading & filling problem Before the fuel pump replacement????
Has the fuel pressure been checked?????

my 040 ranger fx4 keeps stalling out
i have a concern on my ranger as well, i just did tune up, changed out spark plug wires, spark plugs, fuel filter, oil, changed out tps, maf and all 3 o2 sensors, my truck sounds loud at start, with high idle, and i dont think thats normal, and then just sets into a steady more calm idle after 25 sec or so. my truck runs good for about 15 min then stalls out n turns off, i can turn it on again n then starts off like nothing happend..really confused on what to do...and the owner before me took out cat conv.dnt think that could cause it to shut down.
