I modeled it on the lines of a fridge truck. Wish I coulda come with it and be a part of the 'transplant team'. If you pull the front clip in one piece, it makes the transplant so easy. Then when you work on the front sheet metal you can get in there 'nice and deeplike'.........

Great advice. Pulling the whole clip was about a hundred times easier than pulling a fender with all those rusted bolts.

As that other Larry would say..... you are 'gittin er done'. I like the way you get right after it. I still have my front clip off because it's so incredibly easy to chase those last oil drips or wiring details or anything related. After I figure out my wiper conversion I'll fix my fenders and paint all the tough spots and button the whole thing up. Happy Wrenching!

Gary, I thought your front clip was still off because you love running it around like that. Not that your neck is "red", or anything!

Next thing you know, there will be a front clip shipped to somewhere in the country because you don't need it!

I got dibs on your headlamp doors!

By the way, if you take the front glass out you will not need to mess with wipers!

Guys, I have this drive shaft for my three speed:

… but the 4-speed trans Gary sent me with the extra emergency brake has this output flange, and it requires a longer shaft.

How do I find a drive shaft for it?

Take some good measurements then have it made longer. Check around, there are shops that do this, usually in larger towns though. Probably Gary would tie one end to a tree and the other onto the biggest rig that he has and give it a tug to stretch it. Welding additional length onto the shaft is not all that tricky but it should be balanced after completetion. The last one I had done cost a little over a hundred bucks and that included new u-joints.

What Spur said.... and actually I'd cut it in half in the middle and find a piece of pipe from something like an old swingset or electrical conduit for a sleeve, and weld it all up. Then I'd drive about 65 mph and if it doesn't shake apart, you're good to go. Actually I think you should go for the 100.00 professional job. I got license plates for my project yesterday while on the mainland and now I will be driving around a lot more and further (without the clip) and most likely worrying about which of my low budget projects will hold up and what will not. I'm thinking you will be using the emergency/parking brakes on the rear wheels, sorry I snagged the brake lever and linkage to bolt to my current tranny. GB

Clutch mouse

No-go on the driveshaft. The output spline pattern on the 4-speed is similar to or the same as the crankshaft output spline pattern. The pattern on my driveshaft is around 30 splines. Heavy duty vs. light duty. I'll have to get a new shaft to use this 4-speed.

Speaking of heavy duty, that 4-speed is quite a chunk of metal. Twice as heavy by my feel as the 3-speed.

Gary, You sent me some additional material you probably didn't intend to send. The clutch housing was a mouse nest. If you're missing about 5 pounds of seat cushion batting, I know where it went.

I'm sure I can find the 4 bolt flange. The driveshaft shop will need that. I will send it off to you. I thought the old seat was kinda hard and flat!

Do we all use the same clutch alignment tool?

I measured 1 1/8", 10 spline. Am I missing anything if I order this?

I don't know about the four speeds but the shaft I used for my three speed was ten spline 1 1/4" not 1 1/8". I don't have a tool, I use an old input shaft from an old tranny and that is what measures 1 1/4"!

Thanks.

After looking at local parts stores today, I ordered a one from LMC. It was less expensive than the one on eBay, but shipping is twice as much as the tool..

They say it measures 1 3/8" , which I measured as the outside diameter of the splines on these shafts.
