Front End Nosie...Clunk...Click..?
Early (Mgf 12-98) 99 F250 SD XLT, 4x4, auto, stock wheels and tires, no lift kit. There is a clunk/front end noise coming from the left front side of the truck. It can be hear while driving and felt when foot is on the floor. The noise is heard when turning the steering wheel to the left going forward or when backing out the driveway. Also is heard when driving under 25 mph when the truck goes over bumps, manhole covers or rough spots in the road. To this point I have been unable to identify the problem to correct it. Here's what I have done so far on the left front side.
1. Raised truck and checked ball joint wear. Ball joints ok.
2. Removed brakes/rotors...brakes ok..some warpage on rotors.
3. Removed hub assy, repacked bearing, installed new "O" rings, oil seals
and dust seal.
4. Removed shock, drove truck around block and noise is still there. Can
collaspe shock, when released shock longates smoothly. However,
there is something rattling around inside the shock. Reinstalled.
5. Checked swaybar bushings, tie rod ends. All seem ok.
6. Front different fluid level ok. Front drive line ok.
7. I didn't see any damage to the 2 leaf springs. Although my other late
99 F250 Lariat has 3 leaf springs in the front.
If anyone has any ideas or is experiencing the same or has found the problem I could use some guidance....
Thanks!
Jeff

Mine did the same thing a few years ago and it was really bad when I backed up, sounded like someone taking a hammer to piece of steel. In the end it was determined that my U-Joint was cracked so I had them replaced and it was good to go. Not sure if that is your issue but it gives you another thing to check.

I had the clicking noise. I could hear it real loud when riding slow next to a building. It was the bearings in the hub. But you packed yours so not sure what to suggest. Does it do it in 4 x 4?
As SARDiverDan said - u joints? Carrier bearing? Something in the steering box?
I am sure somebody more experienced will be along.

Check your Ball Joints, Bushings, and while youre under there grease your suspension. When I greased mine all my clunking went away

Thanks for all the great info. I fixed the problem with the clunk noise last weekend.
The passenger side bracket that holds the sway bar was bent with the bolt missing. I bent the bracket back into place, replaced the rubber swaybar busging and installed a new bolt. Tested. The noise is gone.
