Hey guys Im new on this forum and to the whole rebuilding trucks/cars thing so please bear with me.
The place I work at there is a guy that got this 76 f150 ranger xlt long bed from Texas to take the body off and put it on his truck. He has no use for the rest of the truck and needs to seel it.
My plan - buy the 460 engine (which currently runs fine) and completley rebuild it with the help of you guys and my buddy whole rebuilds engines part time, then in lets say 2 years buy a whole truck from down south with little to no rust and take the engine out of it and put this built 460 in it. When I get the rest of a truck I will be rebuilding all of that too.
My questions - is the 460 (pics below) worth $500 maybe $400 ?
Can I find used parts like intake, headers, cam, heads, carb, etc., fairly easy off the internet ??
Ok looks good thanks !
Next question..
Could I put this 460 in a f250 (73-79) if I got one of those over getting a f150 ?
I don't care if I need to buy the aftermarket motor mounts just as long as I don't need to do any welding/cutting/grinding on anything.
A lot of those trucks came with a 460, so a swap is generally do-able; however if the engine being swapped is from a different family you'll be changing motor mounts. If it has a different transmission, you could be looking at bell housing, flywheel, etc...

Right now the truck is powering a c6 auto transmission and I would much rather it be a manual truck.
So if I buy a manual truck what parts will I need to change since the engine is coming from an auto ??
$300-$400 is a decent price for both of you if it's a strong running engine. A compression test would be an important start on detirmining the value. Wear items such as timing chains are readily available, and not very hard/expensive to do.
Used parts such as manifolds, carbs, distributors are an easy find on craigslist. Price new items so you have a good idea what the part costs new. Used camshafts are not the way to go. You can get a new cam and lifters for a couple hundred dollars. Installing a used cam RARELY works out in the long run. Headers will be hit and miss, since you'll be after a specific application.
Installing the 460 into the truck you end with is no big deal. Search out one with a 351M or a 400. SAME bell housing bolt pattern as the donor 460. The 6cyl and small blocks use a different bell housing bolt pattern. Finding a 315M/400 powered truck should be simple enough, and save you cash/headaches in the long run. As for changing to a manual, you'll need a 460 flywheel, not overly common if it's internally balanced, but not to difficult to find. You'll find write up's here on what you'll need.
Yea I was looking at a bunch of Summit parts and saw nice camshafts for $150-$350.
Is it ok to buy used aftermarket heads as long as there not in bad shape or showing bad signs.
So say I get a (73-79) F150 that has a 400 in it and it's a manual.
What exactly will I need to change to put a 460 in it that came from a auto F150 ?
Heads are where the real HP lies. Used heads are scary, unless you know the seller. Your desired H/P number is most critical when picking heads. For the amount of $$$ you'll spend on iron heads to enable them to accept a large camshaft and flow well, your $$$ aheads buying aluminum. Edelbrok makes an inexpensive ENTRY head. But 500-550HP with an iron headed motor running pump gas is VERY attainable. 500HP is a lot on the street , and way more than the rear end can handle traction wise.
Ok so I looked at Summit a little bit ago and saw their heads going anywhere from $750 to $3,500. Also they only had aluminum ones so who has the iron heads ?
Did a bit of research on the 460. Back in the 70 this was the engine Ford was running in the NASCAR world and was dominating along with Dodges 427 big block. Ford and the Mopar world went crazy with these engine. I know this is a forum about trucks, but if I were you would drop it in another truck, have fun with it an drop it in the a mustange shell of the 60's era. May take some work and fine tuning, but it would be worth it in the long run.
