Made it home yesterday after a 4 day, 266 mile round trip and over 80 miles off road in my 64 f250 4x4. Multiple trips up a really steep hill climb near camp and no major problems! 4wd worked great (was unsure if it would work), motor ran like a champ, only thing I noticed is that the front pinion is leaking at the yoke but that's no biggie. Here's a pic I took at one of the mine shafts we went to, I parked my tire up on this mound.
Tuff trucks theyll get you there and bring you home again. Im looking forward to the day I take my 65 out and test the 4wd and see how it performs. Nice pic.
I have a nearly identical 63', but its white. I take mine out to the desert, looks very much like where you were driving. One of the first times I went out I pulled out a stranger who was stuck, that made me feel pretty good. That old truck performs just as well as any other jeep or truck I've seen in the desert. The only difference is I have to go pretty slow on the whoops because the suspension sucks and the tailgate will unhinge it self and hit the hitch. I found that out just after I got done painting the damn thing.
Have fun with it. Make sure you go prepared, I keep a shovel, tire slim, water, oil, brake fluid, starter fluid and an extra radiator cap in my tool box just in case. I'd like to take a jack as well, but those cost money
It's got a somewhat built 390 around 400hp, got 8.7 mpg there fully loaded going up hill a lot along the way and it was kinda windy heading up there, I wasn't taking it easy on the pedal either, 3000-3500 rpm all the way there 65-80mph on the gps, went up about 4000 feet in elevation.
