I would start with a fluid and filter change and see what kind of mess is in the pan

Here is a great method for transmission fluid replacement, written by Mark Kovalsky. Click Here!

I did it back when my truck still had the automatic in it. It didn't fix my problem, which I only found out later was being caused by a P0500, but it did work nicely and easily to replace all of the fluid. I would recommend this method.

Check the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) in the rear differential too (especially if the speedometer "bounces" as you drive). It can cause all sorts of shifting issues. Check the brake lights as well. Believe it or not they can screw with the way these things shift.

The place to start is checking for transmission codes.
