Ford Rear Axle ID Question

Hello experts,

I have an ad on craigslist looking for 9" center section so I can learn how to take them apart and rebuild them. I got a quote to have gears setup and was floored by how much shops wanted to do this.

Anyways...I had a guy call me and say he has a removeable 3rd member from a newer ford axle and is sure it isnt a 9".

He said it is from the 90's or even newer. What axle would have a removeable third member that isnt an 8" or 9"

He said he thinks its an 8.8 but I told him they have the removeable rear cover and the carrier is removeable from the back. He said this has the whole unit that removes from the front.

Thanks in advance, Dave

I believe Ford stopped using the 9 inch in the early 80's; however, places like Currie continue to custom make them to this day. Maybe it is not Ford, I think Toyota may have made a simalar unit....

I've never seen a Dana with a drop out center section like a Ford diff. Unless you have to travel for hours, it's worth a look to see what the guy has. At the very least, get some pics from the guy and post them here. If it is a Ford part, and if it is a drop out center section, it's either a 9" or an 8", which is a baby version of the 9". There will be some kind of Ford identifying marks on it. And it's older than 1984. After that, except for 3/4 ton and larger trucks, every rear drive Ford that I'm aware of has/had either the 7.5" or 8.8" rear cover type diff. And those have been around since the mid-late 1970's. You've certainly got our curiosity up.

Just trying to think of all possibilities here....Did Ford use a removeable third member in the front differential of a newer 4wd maybe?

Not that I'm aware of. My guess is the seller is not 100% correct with his facts. It's either older than he thinks, or it's not Ford.

He lives 15 minutes away and said he would take $20 just to get it out of his garage. I figured it was worth going to look at but was just trying to figure out what he has.

Thanks all!

I figured as much. Did you check to see what gears were in it? 8"ers have value, if it's in good shape. Even so, the case alone is worth at least $20. If it isn't junk, you could make a couple bucks on it.

I really couldn't say about the interchangeability. You'll have to check with someone with a Hollander interchange manual or a friendly Ford parts guy.

9" thirds are easy to differentiate from 8" third members. The 9" thirds' pinion overhangs the 2 bottom holes that you use to attach it to the housing.

Or he can always just take a tape to the ring gear.
