I have an '06 F250 that has an annoying squeek or rubbing noise in the steering column. It appears to be comming from the boot the shaft passes through in the fire wall. I took it into the dealer and when I described the noise, he mentioned thay have seen this before and it could be fixed by spraying a lubricant inbetween the boot and the shaft, which they did. Of course this did not fix the problem only lessened it.

Has any one else had this problem and found a fix for it?

 

Yes and No.

I know what you are talking about, i have an 05 and it does this. I tried the lubricant but it didnt really do much. So far, i kinda just got used to it.

 

My 02 does it. Goes away when the weather warms up.

 

My '05 squeaked the first couple months I had it... totally gone now.

 

We have a couple 06's at work that do this. My boss found it kind of annoying and the Ford dealership did the same thing to his (spray the lubricant). Seemed to help a bit but it is still there. I just lived with it, but that's just me.

P.S. On the 2 05s at work, it went away after a while.

 

My '02 also does this. I wonder if it is part of the steering column. Mine seems to be just behind the steering wheel. I may try the spray, can't hurt.

My 02 has done this since new. The dealer fix usually lasts a couple of weeks to months. It is annoying. I was told it is where the shaft passes through the firewall.. If anyone knows a fix please post. I hate rattles.

 

This is driving me nuts. I hear it every time I turn the wheel. I have had the Ttruck since Sept. and it just started to do this in April It does it at all times now. I can't believe a repair center cannot fix this. Is is possible to disassemble this boot and grease it rather than just spraying lube into it.

 

I agree, mine sounds more like its right behind the wheel, like a rubber diaphragm or gasket or something. Just drive it some more, before too long, there will be another squeek or something somewhere else that will take your mind off of the one in the steering.

Its a truck, face it, you didn't buy a precision engineered German automobile. There are some things that i need fixed at the dealer, this, however, is not one of them that even made the list.

 

Lots of complaining about this problem. ( Same here) Does anyone have a solution. Was it the boot.. Is there a part number? Was it the steering shaft universal joint? Was it the steering box?

Mine really only does it turning short increments to the left.

Kinda sounds like a moan.

 

Check out the TSB/recalls top of your screen I think I saw something about gearbox squeaks the other day, this is it for 2004 gas engines don't know if it helps you or not?

had that on my 06. Steering gear needs replaced. They had several around 05 06 years that were doing that.

To me it sounded more like a dry bearing when I turned the steering wheel.

 

I performed a power steering flush with 3 quarts Mobile 1 Synthetic and the squeak is gone. For now.
