Looking for Help/knowledge about rare truck
Hello! I just registered for this website and I am seeking information about a rare truck that I own. I have a 1968 Ford 2 Door Crew Cab 4x4. I am the 3rd owner; I have owned it and driven it for years. I bought it from a guy who said it belonged to his best friends dad who was a railroad crew boss back in the 60's. He told me it was 1 of 230 but my research online is indicating differently. I believe the pickup was sent from the Ford Factory to a company called Crown Fabrication of Canada. This company was formed in 1968 as an extension of Orrville Metal Specialty Co. & Crown Steel Products Co. - Orrville Ohio. Crown Fabrication was formed for the production of crew cabs and van interiors when Ford Motor Co. opened the Ontario Truck Plant to reduce production costs. My 68 Ford appears to be possibly a 1 of 1 custom job because I have searched for over a decade and never seen one anywhere (came close on oldfordcrewcabs.com once but was a 1966). Anyways, I am at work right now and do not have any specs on hand but could get them posted if someone thought they could help guide me to some useful information. Thanks for any help in advance. Thanks for the photobucket tip. I put some of my pic on a flash drive and downloaded them to photo bucket this this morning. Big Orange is my 76 crew cab. The 68 2 door is has a ton of room in the back seat and the front passenger seat is a fold up sucide type like in some of the broncos. You will notice the rear passenger windows are much like those seen on buses like the drivers window on a school bus. Also, the bed on the truck was customized in a factory, but only measures 5 1/4ft. The only modifications I have done to it besides tires and wheels is a 4 inch lift. It has what I believe is a 390 from the factory. Truck still runs great. Let me know what you think. Here is the link Pictures by sawimer - Photobucket

I have a friend that had a '66(?) F350 that was a 2dr crew cab. It was built back in the 60's and used as a car hauler for drag racing. My friend bought the truck/car combo in 1971 and raced it for 30 yrs. The rear doors didn't open, it's been a few years since he sold everything so my memory is sketchy.
The company in Orrville, Ohio was well know for building cabs/bunks for truck for many, many years. It's been years since I have seen anything coming out of that area, not sure if they are still around??

yes, it is very much like a super x-tra cab. I guess I refer to it as a 2 door "crewcab" because it is larger than an extra cab and some of the research I have done refered to trucks like mine as being special orders often designed for "crew bosses" for government agencies like the forest service or railroad. Also, if you owned a ford dealership you also had this priviledge of custom ordering crew cabs in that era (around 65-68).

So this crew cab is rolling on a long wheel base highboy frame? never knew about the 2 door crew cabs I've seen the 3 doors got any interior pics looks like the rear windows are longer then my 71 crew cabs yours looks almost like mine with the paint but mine is a short bed 4x4 great crew you have there maybe try a Marty report on it but I've heard they don't go into specifics for crews

Yes, you are correct. I am confident it is Coach built garbz2. I have not looked at the tags in a bit but if I remember right it is a 131 in wb. I have shown the truck to several professional automotive experts and instructors that I know locally and they all agree the bed of the truck was definetely formed at a factory because of the molding, forming and welds on the bed, especially near the front of the bed where they meet the cab of the pickup. I will try to get some more pics up of the interior and tags on the door. Although the front seats are torn and shot from wear and tear the rear seat is pretty good and I have pulled back the headliner to make sure there is no rust. As you can see from some of the pics the exterior has some typical issues but nothing serious and the floor boards are solid. All electrical work perfect and I have replaced all brake lines, wheel cylinders and drums to make it safe to drive; in fact it was my daily driver for several weeks this summer.
Not long after I bought the truck, I sold my 70 Ford highboy and started to fix this truck up....when bam..I started a family and realized how expensive kids are and that projects get put on hold. Now they are 2 and 4. I am hoping that once I get them out of day care I can afford to continue to refurbish this bad boy, but I want to do it right. If I can't, I want it to go to someone you can and would really appreciate it. (At this point, it is not really for sale.)
