Survey on Tire Wear! What's going on?

If I'm not mistaken, these Superduty-type trucks all put more wear on the front tires than the miles do. I could have put this in the Superduty forum, but I wanted to keep the weight in our noses and the suspension design we have constant. This helps to eliminate variables and a grand debate of leaf vs. coil.

My front tires are cupping. It's early, but I see it coming after I did a fresh rotation. The old fronts (moved to the back) have terrible cupping on the both outside edges. (about 2"-3" on each edge). I've had a front end alignment and new shocks, but no luck. I found this [LINK] interesting.

Does anybody else have this? Is it a suspention design? Tire pressure? Driving habits? Tire size? Maybe we can at least collectively find a common denominator and the brotherhood can "invent" a solution that will be the envy of the world. Well... the envy of Superduty owners who don't have a solution.

What rating do your tires have, D or E? I have E rated tires and run the pressure on the high side (65+) to ensure even wear. I have had no uneven wear to date.

I do too Greg, E rated and 70-75 lbs of air. Haven't had any abnormal wear and I tow a good bit.

I had a 442 Olds "back in the day" that would cup the tires and all the kings men and horses couldn't figure it out. Tried everything, inflation, alignment, balancing, different tire brands, trueing, shocks etc. but never got it right.

For now, I'm good on tire wear on the Super Duty.

Just noticed some outside edge tire wear on my MS-2's this weekend. They have about 3K on them. The last set of MS's that were replaced got 95K with one rotation at 50K. There was some outside edge wear on them but it seemed to even out and didn't get any worse. Hope this makes sense. Load range E, 65psi all around

Mine does the same but on the inside of the tire. Front end is tight, new ball joints, etc.. I'm thinking my ordeal is incompetence at the alignment shop, maybe. The fancy printout they give me says it's "in specs" but oddly enough when I bring it back I'm out. I'm going to throw the red head steering box I've had laying on the shelf in and take it to a new place I trust more for another alignment. Sure hope I get it resolved and you as well. Even with a killer discount my mud tires run $300 each, way to much money to deal with bad tread wear. If I ruin them being a goof that's one thing, uneven wear is another.

I am having some uneven wear on the front. Have some Mastercraft tires on front from PO. Seems the outside edge is wearing faster than the rest. 70 PSI BTW E rated (but I will double check and make sure)

I put two Cooper AT/R load range E on the rear

Folks, please add your tire ratings (D or E). I believe these rating may be having a significant impact on the findings.

I have Firestone Transforce 265/75/16E and the fronts are cupping on both sides about an inch. I run 65 PSI all the time.

I had the same isssue about a month back and the tire shop said it was upper ball joints on both sides.Very hard to notice since the lower ball joints were tight and it was difficult to apply any force to get them to move. Had to use a crow bar to get them to move at all. Changed them and got an alinement so we shall see what happens. Too soon to seen any change although the steeering is tighter now.

I think I've run though nearly 5 sets of tires so far to date. From memory, they were:
  1. LT 265/75R16E Firestone (OEM brand)
  2. LT265/75R16E Bridgestone Revo
  3. LT265/75R16E Bridgestone Revo
  4. LT265/75R16E BF Goodrich All Terrain
  5. LT265/75R16E Firestone Transforce AT

In my case, the fronts do seem to wear quicker than the rears but the wear appears to be evenly distributed across the tread pattern. I haven't noticed any cupping that I am aware of. I try and rotate the tires at each oil change but it ends up being every other oil change at least...

I have been averaging between 55k-60k miles per set of tires. I keep 80 psi up front full time. The rear pressure is 70-80 psi depending on what my workload is like that week. My current set has 52k miles, here is a photo of the wear pattern.

Hope this info helps.

The unwritten rule bigger the tread more rotation. Front to opposite rear, rear to front same side. Use the air rating on the tire not the truck. I always use 10 ply rating (E).

I have E with 80 PSI because the tire told me to (Generals). I'm now tinkering with different pressures.

Ball joints, eh? My old back tires have "unnatural" tire wear from breaking loose under throttle.

I've got 10,000 miles on a set of load range D Cooper Discoverer STTs @ 50psi rotated every 5,000 miles. No odd wear patterns visible thus far.

You also have to pay attention to tire brands. I dont seem to have a prob I am running Dayton Timberline 285/75/16 E rated and keeping around 75 all around with airlift airbags in rear.
Some cheaper brands can have soft spots they can wear quicker and when it comes time for warranty they blame suspension because of "cupping"
