Looks like it's been leaking for a while. If it was me I think I'd try to smooth the surface out as best as I could and use the gasket

Oh, by the way, there are two of these plugs on the head, what are they for?

The 3M roloc stuff works pretty good on that kinda thing. I use them all time on stuff. Most parts stores have a pretty good selection. Get a backing plate and chuck it up on a drill motor. Ya gotta be care full with the sandpaper like discs. The cut pretty fast.

Thanks and dont worry.

That's the only two? I thought there was one of the hex head plugs by each exhaust port. And two of the recessed 3/8 drive pipe plugs, at the number 4 and 8 ports.
The pipe plugs go into the water jacket. You'll have to pull the other ones yourself to see what they're for.

Rodney, there are two 3/8 drive plugs, one plug about in the middle of the head and another one on the rear of the head. I'll look tomorrow and see if there are some recessed hex head plugs. I've pulled enough stubborn bolts for now! LOL

The guy at the machine shop loaned me a board with emery cloth like stuff attached to it and I ran it across all the ports and it cleaned them right up. What a nice guy, he didn't know me but give it to me to use and trusted me to return it. Good business man, he will get me future business. Once again, story of my life, waiting on the UPS man! Tracking number says Wed night.

The square head plugs are the block drains, but you'd only need to pull the rear ones to drain it. They are actually a touch smaller than 3/8". I sacrificed a 3" extension to the grinder to make a removal tool.

On the manifold gasket/no gasket question. I installed a set of the fel pro's with the ultra copper spray on mine in 2006. No issues to date.

Flapper wheels do work great don't they.

Block drains up that high on the heads?? Ed the parts guy is sending me a gasket, I assume its a Motorcraft. I have heard of the ultra cooper but not in spray form? So Cookie, is this just an extra form of security to make it last longer?

Glenn the 3/8 drive plugs go into the water jacket. There are two on each head. On the passenger head the forward most plug has been removed and that's where the nipple is installed to supply coolant to the heater core.
