I had a hard start and it took awhile for my truck to run normal. I want to try to read the codes. I was loaned a CAN OBD 2 Cen Tech from a coworker. I do not know if this will work on my 02 7.3 ? I also do not know where the plug is you hook it up to? I have only read the codes once years ago on my old Ranger. Any help thanks Joe
Your OBD II port is along the bottom of the dash above the throttle pedal. Most likely the code reader will not pull the codes. You will need something like Autoenginuity or a proffesional scanner to pull your codes.
Thanks, i appreciate the info. One of these days i will do that, as there are some helpfull members around here that i have talked to before. So im guessing there is something very odd or complicated about the computer in our trucks that requires a special scan tool? Thanks

I believe the only reason OBD-II scanners will not work is that cars were required to be OBD-II compliant when this standard was put into effect in the 1996 model year. I believe the diesel engine has a number of sensor outputs that are not OBD-II compliant, thus OBD-II readers can get some of the codes, but not all of the codes for our trucks.
If you can wait about a month, I can help you out with AE (I'm up near Pyramid Lake)...I have a broken leg and I am out of commission. PM me and we can then get together.

NO, OBD II Readers can connect to our trucks and read generic OBD II codes. Generic codes are a standard code that all auto manufactures use. Like MAP. You will find that those codes are the same on Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Toyota, etc. Since the powertrain on our trucks due not use generic codes, they are considered manufacture specific. That is why the OBD II readers have such a limited use. If you had a 5.4L or the V-10, you would find that the OBD II reader would Pull more information.
You can hook up a standard OBD II scanner to our trucks and you will get a MAP Sensor, Speed Sensor, and RPM. Those are the only OBD II generic items supported. If you have a code for one of those items, you would be able to retrieve it along with generic body codes.
