First Time Ford Owner 1960 F100
Hello, just picked up a 1960 Ford F100, its about 95% complete minus the engine and trans. It has the stock I6 but hasn't ran in probably over 10 years. Thinking of changing it to the 292 Y8 but been told the Windsor V8 would be better???and what transmission would i be looking for. What are some things that i should keep my eye out for? Or any kind of help at all would be nice. Thank You and please bare with me i'm new to anything Ford.

Hi, cnote, and welcome to FTE.There's no problem with a Y-block's power, depending on what you want to do. And it will likely bolt up to whatever transmission you have, whereas going with a Windsor would mean a transmission change as well - so,more money.
The Y will be a bit more money to re-build, but they are very durable. And why do what the Legions of Sheeple are currently doing? We aren't C***y guys, after all.
I also like the idea of that I6 223.Look what one member, Col. Flashman has done with his:
1958 Mercury M100 4x4 - '58 223c.i. I-6
You can probably pump it up a bit.Parts, especially performance ones, will be more difficult to find, though. But you might be able to obtain over 20 mpg, making it more affordable.Visit the Inline 6 section of FTE and ask around.
Two suggestions.First, in the User CP,put your location. That way,it will show up as you post.Other members can see where you are, and ones close-by may offer to lend a hand or can perhaps provide parts. Second, post up some photos when you can.
Good Luck,
Steve

If you went with the Windsor, a C-6 would be a good tranny if you wanted an auto. However, I have to also put in my vote to rebuild the 223! Once you clean the years of oil and dirt off them , they are pretty little engines. Why not have something a little different from the others!

The 223 won't blow your hat off but will get you down the road consistanly and have a lot of fun doing it.
If your tranny still has oil in it and dosen't have any noticable broken teeth when you take the top cover off it, you may get by with flushing it out with new gear oil and refilling it and using it! Not always the case but possible!

I wish I kept my 223 in my recently restore 64 model; but no I wanted to go big and converted my ride to a 360 4bl and C-6 combo; Had to do the engine & trans conversion along with drive shaft mods.
Cost me some; and I did all the work minus drive shaft mod. I estimate I have over 600 in just getting this done; to include new radaiotr as well.
So remeber there's alot involve is trans plants.
