Doughnut Spare Tires, standard? new E350s
IS this true? Has anyone every seen on of these? I know for sure new Ford vans have $90 option for a full-size spare tire. But I'm finding references about space-saving tires coming standard.
A google search of ... 2012 Ford E350 returns many auto reference websites that show 2011 and 2012 E-series van come with a space saving spare tire.
Can any confirm this is true, does a doughnut tire mounted on a 16" rim, with 8 - 6.5 lug pattern really exist? If this is true, I am ashamed to say... I want one.
I have a full-size spare for my 2008 E350 Wagon; it no longer fits under the bed however. I want to know more about this mythical van doughnut spare. My hope is this doughnut tire is for real. I need one to fit back under the bed. My new/used trailer hitch is a Monster! I lost room clearance in that area. I have a massive PullRite hitch almost installed (1/2 installed).
I'd like to "trade-down"?? my spare for this doughnut spare if possible. I have been checking under new U-Haul vans here in Seattle. They all have full-size spares. I called both a Dealer Fleet Salesman and Discount Tire to ask if they have ever seen one. They where angry I wasted a few minutes of there time. "who would ever want a doughnut spare on a one ton van?" Outrageous question! Well... I need one.
As the door sticker indicates, my four original tires (only 14,000 miles) are 225/75 R16. I just learned a few day ago, my spare is really a 245/75 R16. I had never looked close before. I know Cargo vans come with 245/75 16 tires, and wagons come with 225/75 16s for some reason. In conflict with my door sticker, my spare has never been the correct size.
I a perfect world, some good Ford Van guy will read the post some time soon, contact me, then trade his space saver spare for my, never mounted, Hankook Danapro AS, 245/75 full-size spare.
Can any tell me tire size of my mythical doughnut spare? Some large domestic cars come with size T145/80 -16 doughnuts. A few pics in my gallery.

i wouldn't choose a donut for a 1-ton van. they just aren't worthy of a vehicle this heavy. if i were you, i would measure how much space you have for a spare once you install your new hitch, and maybe you'll find out that a 225/75 will fit in there, but the 245 thats there won't. or whatever size it may be. but i would choose to run a "real" tire of a smaller size long before i even think about running a donut.
that is, unless you have a limited slip or locking differential, in which case you MUST run the same size for both rear wheels at all times.
