And no, I don't believe that players should TRY and hurt other players, but consider the following:
1. There are refs watching their every move
2. The plays are taped and reviewed by the NFL
3. The games are watched by millions
Yes, they knocked Favre down in the NFLCS in 09 (and MN probably should have kept him out), but hmmm -- not even a penalty IIRC. Nothing from the league after the game.
If the bounty system is true, it's a sad deal. But one does wonder how they got away with it. Seems that the observers were, at the least, incompetent.
Some bounties were player induced/funded. Kind of a completive thing among the player. Others were brought about by the coaches.
Both are bad but, the latter is more than inexcusable. Any coach found guilty of this should be banned or at the very least suspended....At any level of play. In any sport.
I hear ya, but I thought that's why they've got so many rules already. If their purpose is to take away the dangerous plays and potential injuries, then it seems like they would be getting flagged when it happens. How do you sweep it under the rug so long? Nobody can keep a secret these days for 5 minutes.
I think it is common practice throughout the league. Can they show any video or a player that was critically injured during the whole supposed bounty era. Brett Favre and Kurt Warner even said that the hits on them were legal hits and that they do not see an issue.
I see the other teams are very silent. I believe it to be common practice in full contact sport. What are they supposed to do... put a pillow behind the guys body before they knock him down?
I am not a huge fan of football. I do think that much of this has been made into a bigger deal than what it is.
Apparently there's a helluva lot more respect amongst professional wrestlers (YOU know.....those 'fake' athletes.....) than amongst NFL players. There was a great 2-hr special on a couple of times called 'The Unreal Story of Wrestling'.....goes through the whole saga starting mostly around the turn of the century (19th to 20th that is....). Interviewing those guys, they're just like 'hey...i'm just trying not to kill the other guy....he's gotta make a living too.....'. As 'fake' as it is, it's violent, and NOT maiming the other guy is an actual art......
Football is already a tough sport. Injury is part of the game. While I wouldn't want to see them legislate themselves out of business, there should be no room for a company/coach to pay to have someone targeted for injury. Outside of the game it would be considered a criminal offense.
Despite the fact most contact football can be called "violent" players and coaches who knowingly seek to injure another player enough they're out of the game deserve the fines and sanctions the NFL has handed out. Even though I dislike the word "violent" used in context with a full contact sport there is a line between legal hits and those intended to cause game-ending injuries. It seems the NFL rightly has decided coaches and players who establish or participate in a system where financial rewards exist to "go after" key opposing players for the sole reason to win the game.
We all like to see great competition and a good solid contact that stops the play is fascinating to watch---that some players actually bounce right back up is even more amazing IMHO. I'd hate to have football be reduced to a gladiator blood sport where anything goes, who cares if someone's game, season, career or life is ended---its all in the name of "legal hits" right? Honestly how does this sort of thing make the game any better or exciting to watch?
Professional sports is nothing more than entertainment but without rules it's just another rooster fight where couch potatoes root to see more blood, more injuries all the while thinking its fun, that the players knew what they were getting into anyway. I like to win but would think less of myself if I had to cheat in order to do it. Apparently waving money at already-millionaires eliminates their senses of right and wrong.
The downside for The Saints is those players who didn't like or participate in all this---if there are any that is!
If this bounty or bonus was in place. Who are the players that got the reward and how much was it? I have not heard from any of the investigation that anyone got money so far.
In my mind, that means that the players did not follow through with the offer. will players be suspended? I think so, but it will be hard to prove intentional hurt.
