TO: 7.3 Excursion owners with 4" exhaust
To those of you with an Ex 7.3 with a 4" exhaust- Do you have a problem with drone in the cab? Do you run with or without a muffler or "resonator"? I am wanting to upgrade to a full 4" exhaust and have heard that in an Ex, sometimes you get some drone and I dont want that. Just wondering what yall think, any input appreciated, thanks

It's possible that reported drone on the X has something to do with where the exhaust exit is.
Different vehicle but similar body style- when I installed a larger exhaust on our turbo diesel station wagon the exhaust exited under the body like stock and had drone, especially bad around 70-75 mph. Then I redid it and had the exit stick out past the body. Absolutely no drone with the latter setup.
I believe if the exhaust isn't ejected sufficiently from under it will resonate and create drone. Just my opinion based on experience with the wagon.

MBRP 4" w/muffler here. I miss how quiet it was w/stock exhaust... It's not the deafening drone my '99 454cid Suburban had with basically straight pipes, but its not stock-quiet either. Overall, the stock exhaust with muffler delete on my F350 is quieter - inside and outside the truck. I actually prefer the tone of the straight-piped 3.5" exhaust!
With 100% stock exhaust and the tunes I was running on the X, I had NO PROBLEM with EGT's even towing my 12k lb Toy Hauler in the heat of summer thru the Smokey Mountains. The ONLY reason I went to the 4" system is I have bigger plans for the X and stock won't be an option. There is no MPG or SOTP's power increase, so as long as you have good tuning - I cannot see WHY you'd give up a nice, quiet luxury ride for a noisy 4" exhaust. (I think thats what old people would say... )
All that said, when that 4" MBRP sees 30psi of boost and 2500rpm's - it makes beautiful music!! And I am certain it took 1000's of miles of driving with no radio listening to that song before my fuel economy and tire wear got back to normal - but since I drive ALOT and tow about 50% of that, I miss the quiet interior the stock system provided. I have added dynomat stuff to the floor and will be doing doors and roof, but do not expect it to be stock-quiet ever again...
