95 302 blows black smoke when starting
95 F150 302 4x4 auto will blow a puff of black smoke when it is started in the morning. Doesn't do it for the rest of the day. I just purchased it. Has 59K on it. Filter is clean, runs really well. Gets 14 mpg in town here in hilly Colorado. Any ideas on the smoke?? I don't think it's oil.

Oil smoke will have a blue-white color. Water (as in a head gasket) will be white. Black smoke is from too rich a fuel mixture. It is probably still happening when warm but the cat is most likely taking care of it. See if there are any diagnostic codes in your OBD-II. There may be one (I think is is P0156) about the oxygen sensor slow to respond. Check the connections on the oxygen sensor(s). You may have one that is close to the end of its service life. The 302 on my '92 F-150 has only one oxygen sensor. The factory installed one lasted about 75,000 miles. I am at 161,000 miles now and the replacement is still working fine. If it is not the O2 sensor start checking the fuel system, injectors first, then fuel pressure regulator.
If you reset your computer by removing the power remember to drive your truck for about 10 miles with at least half at steady state open throttle so the computer can re-learn its fuel trim conditions.
