1966 ford f-100 4x4 steering box

Hi i'm fixing up a '66 f-100 4wd that was crashed. The steering gearbox, among other things, was damaged during the crash. I found one that came out of a 66 with power steering at the junkyard, and was wondering if i could use the parts out of it to possibly fix the old one, or if i could find the internal parts somewhere, or if i could get the steering box from another model of truck for cheaper than getting the steering box from LMC truck, and that would be about $400. I would love to get some input on this, and hoping to hear from you soon.
Sincerely,
Brennan Johnson

The 4wd steering box sits in front of the axle and the 2wd sits behind the axle and will not work be sure the box is for a 4x4.
I am looking at putting a PS box on mine and i believe that you can use up to the mid 70's F100 4x4 boxes.

ND is the master of p/n's on this site. Maybe he can help

No, absolutely not!
Welcome to FTE

Not one part is the same between manual steering and power steering gearboxes. The gearbox you found is awful Bendix integral P/S, which was used on 1966/68 F100/250 2WD's, some 1969 F100/250 2WD's.

The following is the gearbox your truck has and what else it was used on: C7TZ-3504-M .. Manual Steering Gearbox / Obsolete / Applications: 1966/75 F100 4WD & 1975 F150 4WD.

No P/S was available for 4WD's until 1973.

The only P/S available for 1973/75 F100 4WD's, 1975 F150 4WD's was Garrison Power Assist P/S, uses a separate P/S control valve and hydraulic cylinder.

The C7TZ-3504-M manual steering gearbox is used, because it has nothing to do with Power Assist P/S!

Two long P/S hoses, pressure and return, route from the P/S pump to the control valve. Two short P/S hoses, pressure and return, route from the control valve to the hydraulic cylinder.

Replacement parts for Garrison Power Assist P/S are hard to find, expensive when found. Swapping in Power Assist is a major operation and due the the scarcity of parts...you don't want it!

1976 was the first year that Ford/Saginaw integral P/S was offered for F100/150 4WD's, also the first year for front disc brakes. Previous years, only 4 wheel drum brakes were available.

It can be done, but it's not an EZ swap. No F100 4WD's after 1977, use F150 4WD parts.

The PS box out of 77 1/2-79 F150 4x4s and 78-79 Broncos can be made to work in a '66 F100 4x4. You will have to get the gears reversed due to the different orientation of the PS box... you can read all about this process in my post on the Slick 60s site: Slick 60's • View topic - Power steering conversion for my '66 F100 4x4? - it works great!

Cheers,
Dion

Hey Brennan,

As you can read in my other response to this thread, I swapped out the manual steering on my '66 F100 4x4 for a power steering setup... and I still have the old manual steering box which is in good condition and I may consider selling. I'm not sure where you're located and if it makes any sense from a shipping perspective, but drop me a PM if you're interested.

Cheers,
Dion

You can get a manual box off a 4x4 and go with an aftermarket hydolic assist setup that will turn 50in tires wedged between 2 rocks lol

My 66 F100 4x4 uses a power steering box out of a 87 Toyota 4x4. It has full power steering and works very well in the truck and has now over 10 years. Plus it cost me, at the time, about $275 to do it all.

Years ago we converted a 66 F100 4x4 to P/S, using the 77-79 F150 4x4 box.
We just turned the pitman arm so it faced forward & everything was fine-I plowed snow with that truck for years. There were some frame mods required to mount the box, but I dont remember exactly what.
