My manual says to use Mercon in the power steering, manual trannys, and transfer case. I went to 4 different parts stores and nobody has straight Mercon on the shelf, everything is Mercon V. On the front of the bottles it says that it is compatable with Mercon and on the back it says it can be used in manual trannys and power steering systems that were previously serviced with Mercon. But then below that it says not to use in transfer cases. I talked to a mechanic I trust and he looked up on some program that gives spec sheets that come directly from the manufactorers and it said Mercon v was ok. I don't know who I should believe, this mechanic has never steered me wrong and I know the specs could've been changed since my book was printed, but I hate going against what the book says.
