Hard shifting after transmission repair

Hard shifting after transmission repair
I have a 99 f150 with the v6 4.X liter, 4x4, auto
I had a new flex plate installed this week.
I picked up the truck today and on the way home I noticed it shifted really hard when accelerating and shifted hard when decelerating as well
Also, the "service engine soon" light is on.
Before being brought into this shop the transmission always ran super smooth and the light was not on.
I have two questions:
1.) Is this normal?
2.) Should I put a hold on the payment I gave this Mechanic (Small Shop with a good reputation but not very well known)? I really don't know what to do.
I called him on the way home and he said " I thought this is how it was before you brought it in" and "bring it in tomorrow morning and we will go on a drive".
Thanks for your input.

Ordinarily, I'd say there might be some bad springs that have to checked after dropping the transmission pan/valve body, but in your case, it seems to have started after the flex plate was installed. They might have missed a harness connection somewhere, or leaked fluid and not topped it off again.
Or, there was a problem beginning already, and the flex plate wasn't the correct repair ?
